When the second season of Marvel's The Punisher arrives on Netflix, Frank Castle won't be in New York City. According to showrunner Steve Lightfoot, Season 2 finds Jon Bernthal wandering the country, looking for peace and a new sense of purpose.

"We find Frank kind of trying to fulfill the promise he made at the end of Season 1, which is that -- you know -- he ended that thing with, 'I no longer have a war to fight,'" Lightfoot explained during a set visit attended by CBR. "He's spent the time trying to just get by. He's been sort of wandering America, in a way having a look at the country that he fought for that he's never necessarily really seen and trying to be a guy who can fit in and leave all the violence behind."

"I think, you know, ultimately for Frank, it's an integral part of his character and it doesn't take him long in episode one to find a new fight to get involved in," he added. "I've always kind of said, you know, at the point Frank just retires and opens a bar, there's no show, so we do always have to find him a new fight to have."

Nevertheless, don't expect Season 2 to be a 13-episode road trip. "We don't spend a lot of time on that," Lightfoot said. "The sense I want in the show is, you know, that he's been wandering because the one thing he doesn't want to do or doesn't do is put down roots. I get the sense in the show is less about the America he's found than about -- you know, it's a huge country in which, if you were to keep wandering, then it's very easy to not put down roots and not be found. I think he's sort of enjoying that nomadic lifestyle."

Sooner rather than later, he revealed, "We come back to New York. We don't start in New York, but we very quickly find compelling reasons to bring him back there."
