The following contains spoilers for Punisher #6, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

In Marvel's new Punisher run, Frank Castle has slowly been realizing he made a deal with the wrong devil. As much as the Hand empowered him with an army of ninjas and supernatural powers to reset order in the world, Frank's been struggling over the High Priestess' tyrannical ways. He didn't like how she tortured his soldiers, which culminated in a civil war, although when Frank tried to flee, his resurrected wife, Maria, began dying again.

Thus, Frank had to return to the Japanese Citadel to serve his masters, all so Maria could live in this warped shell. Admittedly, seeing Frank in this mental and physical prison felt like karma for all his sins since childhood, but it still painted a very human, sympathetic figure -- especially with his innocent wife suffering. Unfortunately, things just go worse for Frank in Punisher #6 (Jason Aaron, Jesús Saiz, Paul Azaceta, Dave Stewart, and VC's Cory Petit) as he had to relive his worst nightmare, but with a very sadistic remix.

In this story, Frank opted to stay with the Hand once he could be reunited with Maria and gain the semblance of family and paradise he lost when his loved ones were gunned down. He also entertained the idea of his kids being resurrected too, as Maria wanted her family back, although the book kept it vague if Frank really pushed forward on this. Eventually, Frank got sidetracked with the war against Ares, who was wearing his skull symbol and trying to get Frank to become liberated, transforming into his old Punisher self again.

Ironically, as they fought yet another brutal battle, Ares realized Frank was no match. He thought he could save Frank and unleash the true Punisher within, but the God of War found a mere shell of the man he respected; someone he felt the Hand emasculated and weakened. As such, he battered and left Frank for dead. Luckily, the Priestess found and revived Frank, all before admitting the procedure to bring his children back wasn't working.

The book revealed shots of them as abominations, with multiple eyes and several appendages, confirming the experiments were going on in secret. The Priestess quickly admitted this zombifying process was harder when it came to bringing those back who had been dead longer than they were alive. It seems, despite multiple attempts and the Beast's magic, they just couldn't get the process right.

Frank was then seen grabbing his sword, with the comic jumping to him in the garden throwing up. It's implied he hacked his kids up, murdering them in what would be another gruesome fate. After all, there's no telling how many times he had to dispose of these mutations, and more so, what it's doing to his psyche. One has to wonder if Maria ever found, what she'd say as well as this is a betrayal of her love and trust.

Going through this as a father was horrific the first time around, so for Frank to endure all this pain again, even if it's just once, is the worst punishment he could experience. Ultimately, it reiterates how this pact with the Beast will keep on stabbing him in the back, and heart. And more so, it keeps reminding Frank there'll always be ramifications for his actions, especially with folks like the Hand who, no matter what, are always going to be self-serving villains.
