An animated adaptation of PUBG: Battlegrounds is in development.

Announced by Krafton, Inc., the company that owns the rights to the hyper-popular battle royale shooter, the project will be helmed by none other than Adi Shankar. Shankar is perhaps most notable for his role as executive producer on Netflix's critically acclaimed Castlevania anime. Beyond that, Shankar was also the executive producer on cult-classic superhero film Dredd and the award-winning Lone Survivor.

“As a player, I've been crushing the competition in the Battlegrounds since PUBG released in 2017. I’m grateful to KRAFTON for the trust and confidence they’ve placed in me to execute my vision as a filmmaker and I’m excited to embark on this journey together," said Shankar. “To me, this animated project represents another step in the evolution of mending the torched bridge between the games industry and Hollywood. I look forward to revealing to everybody what winning a chicken dinner looks like.”

Krafton, Inc. is currently making moves to grow the PUBG franchise through a variety of multimedia projects. These include a live-action short film titled Ground Zero which stars Don Lee and an investigative "docu-series" starring Jonathan Frakes called Mysteries Unknown: Birth of the Battlegrounds.

"We are excited to work with Shankar on exploring and realizing a world that brings the game to life for our fans. We look forward to sharing more about this animated project in the near future."

Launched in 2017, PUBG is widely considered to be the game that kicked off the modern era of battle royale games. Despite the game's clunky origins, it eventually grew into a titan of the gaming industry, with a peak concurrent player count on Steam of over 3 million. Over the last four years, it still manages to pull in around 55 million players across all platforms. The PC version of the game has sold over 70 million copies and PUBG Mobile, a free-to-play version of the game for mobile devices, has received over one billion downloads.

If you want to see what all the hype is about, PUBG is available on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Google Stadia, PC and mobile.
