Psycho-Pass tells the tale of a grim future for Japan where the government uses technology to calculate every citizen's personal hopes and dream, their innermost desires and inclinations, all of which add up to create that person's psycho-pass, represented by a single number. If the number gets too high, the person is judged a latent criminal, and either sent for therapy or executed.

The post-cyberpunk tale filled with socio-futuristic themes and commentaries on free-will in the face of government surveillance has received wide acclaim for its sophisticated narrative and stylish visuals. If you are one of the many fans of the series, here are 10 other anime to watch once you're done with Psycho-Pass.

10 Death Note

If you're interested in the problem posed by Psycho-Pass regarding the wrong kind of people having the power to act as judge, jury, and executioner, Death Note has a lot to say on the subject. Light Yagami is a genius high-school student who discovers a supernatural notebook. If Yagami writes a person's name in the book, they die.

The power of the notebook goes to Yagami's head, and he plots a world-wide massacre of all the individuals he deems morally unworthy of living. It is up to an elite police task force led by the enigmatic Detective L to end Yagami's reign of terror.

9 Ergo Proxy

In the future, humans and robots live together in harmony, until a rogue virus introduces the concept of free will to the cyborgs, some of whom break out on their own and commit murders. Inspector Mayer is tasked with bringing down the robots, and in the process discovers a deeper conspiracy involving a new species of humans engineered by the government and codenamed 'Proxy.'

Ergo Proxy was considered visually groundbreaking for its combination of 3D modeling with cel animation. The themes of the show, along with the cast of characters and mystery at the core of the narrative, drew praise from critics.

8 Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex

Based on the staggeringly successful manga series that also gave birth to the 1995 anime movie Ghost in the Shell, Stand Alone Complex tells a different story from the manga, as an elite law enforcement unit investigate cybercrime cases.

Their first task is to take down the hacker terrorist known as The Laughing Man, and it is this case that ends up creating the Stand Alone Complex, which is a socio-psychological condition where several unrelated individuals react in the same manner to a particular situation.

7 Attack On Titan

The evil government heads of Psycho-Pass would have gotten along well with the evil government heads of the anime series Attack on Titan. In a world where giant, vaguely humanoid beasts with an unsatiable appetite regularly attack the protective walls of a city, it is up to an elite group of aerial ninjas to fend off the attacks.

Monsters are killed, conspiracies are uncovered, and the titans are found to have a much more heartbreaking origin than previously imagined. This is another one of those well-done animes that take a regular monsters-eating-humans concept and turns the whole idea on its head in a grotesquely entertaining manner.

6 No. 6

no.6 anime main cast

In a dystopian future city named No. 6, a young boy named Shion from a wealthy family is moved to provide shelter to a boy, Nezumi, on a stormy night. The two meet again years later, and the circumstances of their first meeting cause Shion's world to turn upside down.

Shion sets off on a desperate quest to uncover the secrets of what he had always believed to be his perfect city, as he comes to realize his deeper feelings for the young boy he had given shelter to all those years ago.

5 Plastic Memories

In the near future, Tsukasa and Isla are a human and cyborg pair of agents tasked with finding and disposing of cyborgs who have neared the end of their lifespan, when their artificial bodies begin to disintegrate and they become a threat to society.

In this reality, cyborgs are just as capable of human emotions as actual people, and so Tsukasa and Isla find themselves falling in love with each other even as it is revealed that Isla is also nearing the end of her lifetime.

4 Monster

The story follows the tale of Kenzo Tenma, who is a Japanese surgeon living in Germany. He comes into contact with Johan Liebert, a former patient of his who is revealed to be a serial killer.

A cat and mouse chase between the two follows, as Kenzo is forced to delve deep into Johan's past to discover the horrifying source of his bloodthirsty nature. The series frequently makes the list of best animes of all time and is considered one of the most intelligent thrillers that the medium has ever produced.

3 From the New World

Five friends are born into a seeming utopia, surrounded by greenery and natural beauty, and with each other for support as they discover their latent powers of telekinesis.

But as they grow older, the cracks begin to appear in their seemingly perfect existence. They become aware of what exactly the price of their power and freedom is, as the young friends are forced into a fight for their survival and a quest to overthrow the existing social order.

2 Paprika

Think Inception, but even more mind-bendy and with all the entire cast looking like anime characters instead of only Ellen Page. A psychologist has created a device that allows therapists to enter the dreams of a subject to better understand their mental state.

Things get out of hand when one therapist starts using the device illegally on patients. The resulting clash between the patient's dream and reality itself becomes a topsy-turvy fight for survival, where nothing is as it seems on the surface and old demons lie waiting beneath the cracks of the subconscious.

1 Psycho-Pass: Sinners of the System

A continuation of the Psycho-Pass narrative as a trilogy of films that explore the backstories of characters that appear on the television show. While it might seem weird to recommend Sinners of the System in such an article, these films are somewhat overlooked compared to the anime series and Psycho-Pass: The Movie.

This trilogy allows viewers to delve deeper into the minds of their favorite characters from the series while getting glimpses of their past lives that led them to become who they are now.

The trilogy is a solid entry in the Pscho-Pass franchise and definitely worth a watch for fans who wish to further explore the strange and forbidding reality revealed in the original series.
