The most recent software update for Sony's PlayStation 5 will finally target a frustrating glitch that caused consoles to install the PlayStation 4 versions of games, despite players purchasing next-gen upgrades.

Sony announced that Version 20.02-02.50.00 would be slightly smaller than the previous update, but would still tackle a few important fixes. The download not only provides the standard improvement to system performance that most upgrades bring, but also the ability to "select and edit video clips using Share Factory Studio from your media gallery." However, one of the biggest improvements the update tackles is the rare cases in which "the PS4 version of a game would install from the disc after you upgraded to and installed the PS5 version."

The issue was a cause of much frustration for some players, especially when they had spent money on the upgrades. Many PS4 games have implemented free next-gen upgrades, such as No Man's Sky, Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Watch Dogs: Legion and recently God of War. However, others required the enhancements to be purchased for a small fee, such as Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. The upgrades allow players using a PS4 disc-copy of a game to run it at its enhanced PS5 settings, so there is no need to receive a new disc or download a digital version.

Many of the upgrades include enhanced graphics and even the implementation of the DuelSense controller's haptic feedback. However, even after purchasing the upgrade, a frustrating glitch would cause some players to still only install the PS4 version.

The implementation of cross-gen games has caused a number of problems since the launch of the PS5. Another issue meant that players who had managed to install both versions of the game might have the console default to playing the PS4 version. There is an option next to each app on the home page that allows players to select "Game Version," wherein they can choose their preference. Gamers who possess a PS5 disc copy of any cross-gen game will not have to worry about the wrong version; however, any digital copies could have access to both, so it is worth checking none are defaulting to the wrong setting.

The update itself should be a simple enough process, as most gamers will simply have to boot up their consoles and the download will commence automatically providing they have an internet connection. Any players that suspect they have not received the download can check for available updates by selecting Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings > Update System Software.
