It has been reported that Sony's newest console, the PlayStation 5, outsold Microsoft's Xbox Series X/S in Japan during its launch week.

A recent report showed that the PS5 sold 118,085 units within four days of launch, showing that the console outperformed Microsoft's Series X/S, which sold a combined total of 20,534 units over six days. Sony's console has sold out in Japan and it is believed that it will remain out of stock until next year.

It should be noted that the Xbox Series X/S has also sold out in Japan and that retailers have shown demand for the product was higher than expected. Due to a combination of the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, as well as high pre-sales, retailers have reported issues meeting demand as stock for both the PS5 and Series X/S have been limited.

The PlayStation 5 has launched worldwide after expanding into Asia, the Middle East and Europe last week. The console has been well-recieved, with many praising Sony's innovation with regard to the DualSense controller, its adaptive triggers and haptic feedback.

The PlayStation 5 is now available worldwide. Its Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive retails for $499 USD, while the Digital Edition without a disc drive retails for $399.

The Xbox Series X|S is now available worldwide. The Series X sells for $499, while the Series S is available for $299.
