The PlayStation 3 had a rocky start upon its 2006 release due to the high price tag and lackluster launch lineup. It eventually picked up steam after a couple of years and ended the generation on a high note. While re-releases and remasters are a common practice these days, several classics from Sony's third console are still stuck in its generation.

Even though the PlayStation 5 is close by, hopefully the following games below make their way to the PS4 or Sony's next console sometime in the future. Some of these could use enhancements from modern hardware, while others would simply be fun to play again.

10 Grand Theft Auto IV

Niko Bellic in Grand Theft Auto IV

It only seems logical for Rockstar to re-release this 2008 classic. Many millions of people would jump at the opportunity to experience Niko Bellic's tragic story once again. Licensing issues regarding music would probably be a pain to sort through, but it would be more than worth it in the end. In addition to graphical enhancements, the shooting mechanics could also use an overhaul.

9 Resistance

Resistance Fall of Man gameplay

Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 3 are obligatory games for any PS3 owner. The second entry is a decent FPS, but changes too much from the first game and loses some of its identity. Regardless, seeing this trilogy remastered for modern consoles would be a treat, complete with local cooperative play and online multiplayer. Insomniac has since left the series, but this could kickstart a revival of sorts.

8 Killzone

Killzone 2 explosion

The Killzone trilogy is available on the PS3t, and the last release was the PS4 launch title, Killzone: Shadow Fall. Guerrilla Games has since moved on to the Horizon series, so they probably will not revisit the series. However, these first-person shooters should not be forgotten. Additionally, Sony does not have a lot of first-person shooter exclusives these days, so seeing these come back with modern improvements would give PlayStation owners a shooter of their own again.

7 Max Payne 3

Max Payne 3 shoot dodge

The titular character's third story is one of the finest third-person shooters ever made. Rockstar took their attention to detail and focused it into a linear action game. Max shoots his way through Brazil searching for a kidnapped woman, unraveling a criminal conspiracy, and mostly failing a battle against personal demons. The PS3 version has some serious frame rate issues; perhaps a re-release on PS4 could give fans a smooth, sixty frames per second version of the under-appreciated classic.

6 Pain

This fun PlayStation Network game was a dream for anyone who loved ragdoll physics and environmental destruction. The main gameplay loop involved launching the character from a slingshot and controlling them as they bounced around, breaking bones & wreaking havoc on the street.

With more horsepower, the developers could cause even more destruction on screen and make bigger levels, as well as bringing back the online component which was taken offline in 2013.

5 Infamous

Infamous PS3 game

Sucker Punch is riding high off their recently released Ghost of Tsushima, but fans know this is not the studio's first open-world rodeo. Before recreating thirteenth century Japan and after creating Sly Cooper, the developer made the Infamous series, an open-world game about a regular guy who finds himself endowed with super powers. It is a far more frantic experience than their new game, and the first two entries are trapped on the PS3.

4 Red Dead Redemption

Red Dead Redemption John Marston

Despite its popularity and status as one of the greatest video games of all time, Red Dead Redemption is only available on the PS3 and Xbox 360. Not even PC players can enjoy this masterpiece. A re-release could fix some technical issues and iron out the frame rate. Additionally, playing through the campaign again after beating Red Dead Redemption 2 shines a whole new light on the story and characters.

3 Heavenly Sword

Heavenly Sword PS3 game combat

Ninja Theory's PS3 exclusive did not get a fair shake. It is a short action game, but the story wastes no time throwing the player into massive battles and stunning set pieces. It came out early in the console's life when the install base was relatively small, so it did not reach the audience it deserved. Ninja Theory is now a Microsoft studio, but Sony could still revive the series and bring back the first game.

2 Motorstorm

Motorstorm PS3 racing game

Motorstorm filled an arcade racing voice in a generation when the Burnout franchise only released one title. The races combine several types of vehicles and large tracks with branching paths, a recipe for destruction and mayhem. Developer Evolution Studios went under after the failure of Driveclub, which put the series' future in jeopardy. At this point, fans would be happy just playing the old trilogy once again on modern consoles.

1 Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns Of The Patriots

Hideo Kojima and Kojima Productions used every ounce of the PS3's power to craft the dramatic and often outlandish conclusion to Solid Snake's story. Twelve years after release and the title is still stuck on the console. The game looks gorgeous even today, especially the character models. The only problem with a re-release would be figuring out a solution to the pressure sensitive aiming and shooting, since the DualShock 4's buttons lack such a feature.
