The PlayStation 2 is home to some of the most underrated video games of all time. Lesser-known titles were often overshadowed by mainstream releases launching around the same time. 2002's The Getaway is one of many gritty crime games that lived in the wake of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. Many tossed it aside, viewing it as nothing more than another subpar GTA clone. However, The Getaway is much more than a simple clone and might be getting a chance for redemption.

Rumoor has it Sony is bringing The Getaway to the PlayStation 5. There are few reports stating that a Getaway remake, reboot, or sequel has been in the works for well over a year. An ex-Sony London employee who worked on the original game also commented that a Getaway revival may be in the PlayStation 5's future. Although nothing's been confirmed, it hasn't stopped fans from showing their support.

The Getaway follows the story of Mark Hammond, an ex-gang member framed for the murder of his wife by the Bethnal Green Mob. Hammond's son manages to escape the assassination, but is picked up by the mob shortly after his mother's death. Fearing for his son's life, Hammond is forced back into the criminal underworld and must do the Bethnal Green Mob's bidding to rescue his only son.

The Getaway became one of the more controversial titles in the PlayStation 2 library. Its mature storyline and graphic depiction of London's criminal underground ruffled more than a few feathers upon release. Australia banned The Getaway outright, while a British Company called BT complained about the game using their logo. The controversy forced developers to release an edited version of the game in 2003, tamping down much of its adult content.

Although The Getaway's mature themes caused an uproar during the early 2000s, it pales in comparison to most modern, adult-oriented titles. Games like Grand Theft Auto and Dead Space are much more graphic than The Getaway ever was. It would be nice to see an uncut re-release or remake come to the PlayStation 5, giving the game a second chance at life. The Getaway was ahead of its time in many ways and has more in common with modern mature titles than ones of the sixth console generation.

Unfortunately, returning to the original PlayStation 2 version of The Getaway is more frustrating than nostalgic. The game suffers from subpar graphics and the controls aged worse than some PS1 titles. Although The Getaway didn't withstand the tests of time, its story is still as captivating as ever and is still one of the best narratives on the PlayStation 2. A modern remake could update its mechanics while exposing it to a new generation of gamers.

It's been nearly 20 years since The Getaway became one of the most overlooked games of its era. Though flawed, it gave players a mature, story-driven experience on par with many of the gritty, cinematic crime dramas popular at the time. Seeing the underrated series get a second chance on the PlayStation 5 would be a dream come true for many die-hard fans.
