Sony's journey to the home console market began with a rejected partnership with Nintendo — a decision that would change the course of the gaming industry forever. After gaining its footing through the original PlayStation, Sony set its sights on console market domination through their follow-up, the PlayStation 2. To call the PS2 a success undersells what the PS2 achieved. The PS2 didn't just succeed. To this day, the PS2 is the highest-selling video game console of all time.

The PS2 had an impressive catalog of exclusive titles released early in its lifespan including the hit Final Fantasy X and the influential Grand Theft Auto III. With the new PlayStation Plus set to include PS2 titles in its Premium tier, there is a vast library of PS2 titles players hope will make the cut.

10 SSX Was A Perfect Launch Title Followed By Even Better Sequels

Snowboarding in last place in SSX

Sony couldn't have asked for much better from a PS2 launch title. SSX is a snowboarding racer whose arcade-style gameplay drew inspiration from the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater series. SSX provided tons of replay-ability, offering unlockable characters and a fun local multiplayer mode. That's not to mention SSX's award-winning soundtrack.

SSX was followed by two well-received sequels on the PS2 in SSX Tricky and SSX 3. All three would be a welcomed addition to the new PlayStation Plus. Any newfound attention toward SSX may compel EA to give SSX another chance for the first time in over ten years.

9 Tony Hawk's Underground Took The Skateboarding Series To New Heights

Player exploring their neighborhood in Tony Hawks Underground

After four amazing games, it was easy to wonder if players had seen all there was in the THPS series. Neversoft answered that question with the fantastic Tony Hawk's Underground. Not only was THUG the first THPS game which allowed players to step off their skateboard and roam around, but THUG also included a fleshed-out story mode about the pursuit of skateboarding success.

THUG has long been a fan favorite within the THSP series, and it'd be a great shame if the game and its predecessors, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4, were left out of the new PlayStation Plus.

8 Viewtiful Joe Should Be A-Go-Go, Baby!

Viewtiful Joe

Long before the dawn of independent games, few video games pursued a visual path beyond realism. Players wanted realistic graphics and not even The Legend of Zelda was immune to criticism for failing to provide. In a sea of PS2 games with poorly-aged realistic graphics, Viewtiful Joe glows.

Viewtiful Joe's comic book visual style pops off the screen and would look even better in high-definition. Based around a man who's sucked into a movie world and assumes the superhero role of "Viewtiful Joe," it's odd Capcom has yet to revisit Viewtiful Joe. Viewtiful Joe's inclusion in the new PlayStation Plus may provide the push necessary to make a reboot or a sequel happen.

7 Oh, No, You Didn't Pass Up On The Mercenaries Series

Mercenaries Playground of Destruction

Mercenaries is more than just a video game series with a commercial and a catchy tune. "Oh No You Didn't" by The Wojahn Brothers did a great job selling both Mercenaries 2: World in Flames and the series as a whole. Mercenaries was filled to the brim with charm, fun, and yes, destruction.

The Mercenaries series was set to receive a third title: Mercenaries 3: No Limits, but the development of the game has long been canceled. One of the best parts about the new PlayStation Plus is its ability to reintroduce players to a game or series, many of which have been forgotten to time. This could work wonders for Mercenaries.

6 Persona 3 FES Will Have Players Playing Until The Dark Hour

Persona 3 kicks off with an ominous statement: "Memento mori. Remember you will die. Remember your death." Death is at the very center of P3 and each member of P3's delightful cast must cope with death one way or another. While Persona 4 and Persona 5 are the frequent center of Persona attention, P3 shouldn't be left out.

The new PlayStation Plus provides the perfect opportunity to reintroduce P3 to newer Persona fans — especially with the recent remaster of Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, continuing the story of P3's cast. Persona 3 FES serves as the definitive version of P3 similar to Persona 4 Golden and Persona 5 Royal, and would be the version of choice among PS2 versions of P3.

5 Burnout Would Be An Explosive Addition

Racing in last place in Burnout 2: Point of Impact

How can one reinvent the racing genre? With explosions of course! While most racing games punish players for crashing, Burnout turns it into a game mechanic, allowing players to cause as much destruction and mayhem as possible.

Many players feel the Burnout series peaked with Burnout: Paradise, but that would sell the early entries short. The Burnout series had a stellar run throughout the PS2, peaking with Burnout 3: Takedown. Having any of the first three PS2 Burnout games on the new PlayStation Plus would be a major victory, but having all three of them would be even better.

4 Tekken 4 Deserves A Second Chance

Jin facing off against another Jin in Tekken 4

Tekken 4 is a bizarre entry in the Tekken lineage. T4 took Tekken in a more mature direction, both in terms of character and story elements. Even Paul Phoenix lacks his iconic hi-top hairstyle in T4. Deviations didn't stop there. T4 remains the only Tekken title allowing players to move around before the start of each round and to incorporate uneven stages which encourage players to reach the high ground. While many Tekken fans believe T4 has the best story, it rarely ranks high in Tekken players' list of favorites. As T4 doesn't have a rerelease or remaster, the PlayStation Plus could provide T4 the second chance it deserves.

3 Dragon Quest VIII: Journey Of The Cursed King Is The Crown Jewel Of The Dragon Quest Series

Hero, Yangus, and Jessica from Dragon Quest VIII.

Final Fantasy wasn't the only JRPG series to make a strong showing on the PS2. While the Dragon Quest series only released one PS2 entry, it was a big one. Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King is still considered the best entry in the long-running series by many DQ fans, and for good reason.

DQ VIII's simplistic approach to gameplay and fantastic writing (even in its English localization) allowed it to win over long-term and new fans alike. DQ VIII saw a release for the Nintendo 3DS in 2016, but PlayStation players were left out. It's time for the prodigal JRPG son to return.

2 Half-Life Could Bring The World One Step Closer To Half-Life 3

Half Life PS2

For a series with only one fully original entry since 2007, in the VR-based title Half-Life: Alyx, Half-Life frequently finds its way into video game discourse. This shows the impact the Half-Life and its creator Valve have made in the video game industry.

If a Half-Life 3 ever gets made, the demand needs to exceed beyond internet memes. One way to increase anticipation is to give console players an opportunity to play through the Half-Life series — starting with the original which released for PS2 in 2001.

1 The Lord Of The Rings: Return Of The King Was A Video Game Movie Done Right

Samwise Gamgee fights an orc in The Lord of the Rings Return of the King video game

Video games based on movies were a long-running trend which yielded few worthwhile titles. Movie games were often seen as cheap cash-ins because, well, they were. Gameplay and graphics frequently suffered in these attempts to profit off the high from recent movie releases. That's why the video game based on The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King film is so special.

Return of the King, as well as The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, were great games in their own right. Both allowed players to control their favorite characters from the film and level them up for immense replay-ability. With Amazon's The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power on its way, these two The Lord of the Rings titles would be fantastic additions to the new PlayStation Plus.
