The anime genre avoids the heavy foreshadowing that Western animation so often leans into. This may not seem like a big deal, but it allows anime to surprise viewers with plot twists that they would never be fooled by in any form of Western media.

The Promised Neverland anime is a master's class in both horror cinematography and plot twists. This series throws so many twists into its plot that even the best fan theorists will struggle to pin down the future of this anime. The list below acknowledges ten plot twists that viewers never saw coming in The Promised Neverland.

10 Conny's Death May Be Old News, But When It First Happened, Everyone Was Shocked

Don _ Conny _ The Promised Neverland

The first episode of The Promised Neverland introduces viewers to what appears to be an average orphanage. The show spends the majority of the first episode hinting at the fact that the orphanage may not be what it seems, but the revelation that comes at the end of episode 1 is still shocking.

Unless fans read the manga before watching the anime, there is no way anyone could have predicted the plot twist at the end of the first episode. After Conny is guided out of the house by Isabella with hopes of meeting her new parents, it is revealed that she will instead be used as food for a species of sentient demons that rule over this world. If it sounds ridiculous, that's because it is. So ridiculous in fact that nobody could have seen this twist coming.

9 Isabella's Calm Approach To Stopping Emma, Ray, & Norman From Escaping

After the truth is revealed about the outside world, it becomes very clear that Emma, Ray, and Norman are far out of their depth. With this in mind, fans might have assumed that Isabella would put a stop to the children's escape plans as soon as they begin plotting.

Instead, Isabella sits back and gives the kids time to plot. Ironically, this passive behavior makes Isabella appear even more menacing, as fans are left to assume that she is calm only because the kids have no chance of escaping. It isn't revealed until late into the first season that Isabella was aware of the escape plans all along.

8 Sister Krone Is Visually Intimidating But Becomes An Ally

Sister Krone Is Perceptive In Promised Neverland Anime

Instead of immediately barging into action to stop Norman, Ray, and Emma's escape plans, Isabella chooses to use another mom to do her dirty work. Unfortunately, this plan backfires when sister Krone becomes an ally.

There are a number of reasons that fans would distrust Sister Krone before she reveals herself as an ally. Her smile is always a bit too big and her flamboyant personality is jarring when compared to Isabella's calmer disposition. Furthermore, Sister Krone openly plots against Isabella and the children with a terrifyingly worn-out stuffed doll that she has had since she was a child. Still, without Sister Krone's help, Emma and Ray would have never survived as long as they have in the outside world.

7 Ray's Allegiance With Isabella Forced Viewers To Question The Best Boy's True Intentions

Ray & Isabella _ The Promised Neverland

When it is revealed that Ray has been working as an informant for Isabella for the majority of his young life, Emma, Norman, and the viewers are all forced to pause. How could this best boy betray Emma and Norman like that?

As one of only three eleven-year-old children living in the Grace Field Home, Ray is easily grouped in with Emma and Norman. Unlike these two though, Ray has always known the truth about Grace Field House. His knowledge of the world and Grace Field House makes this betrayal hit even harder when it is first revealed. Fortunately, because one twist isn't enough to truly flip the plot of The Promised Neverland anymore, Ray uses his status as an informant to help Norman and Emma plot their escape.

6 Norman's Adoption Date Being Moved Up Came Out Of Nowhere

Norman's Adoption Day

When Isabella finally steps in to stop Norman, Ray, and Emma's plot, she does so with an efficiency that will terrify viewers. After calmly walking out into the woods while the trio is planning its escape, Isabella purposefully breaks Emma's leg to make it impossible for her to escape. This act of violence is shocking, but fans who have been watching Emma up to this point know that this won't be enough to stop her. The plot isn't truly twisted at this moment until Isabella announces that Norman's adoption date has been moved up.

Without Norman, the chances of outwitting Isabella are decimated. This leaves Emma and Norman with no hope of escaping and sends them both into a visible depression that lasts until the plot twists come once again.

5 Emma's Conviction To Escape Is Expected, But Her Organized Plan Comes Out Of Nowhere

After Norman is shipped out to be devoured by demons, Emma and Ray's plans of escape appear to be shattered. Emma falls into depression while she nurses her broken leg, while Ray recedes into the books found in the Grace Field House library.

Up until the day before Ray's adoption is scheduled, it seems that all hope is lost, until Emma appears before Ray to reveal that she has been plotting their escape since the day Norman left. The main character's conviction is nothing new, as Emma has always been motivated to escape since the truth of Grace Field House was revealed, but the way she manages to outwit Isabella by feigning depression is a shocking twist that fans did not expect.

4 The Friendly Demons That Saved The Grace Field House's Children After Their Escape

Sonju and Mujika

Even after escaping from the Grace Field House, Emma and the rest of the escapees are still at risk of being devoured by wild demons who terrorize the woods that they find refuge in. Luckily before any of the kids can be harmed, the plot twists yet again to reveal that not all demons eat children.

Thanks to Sonju and Mujika, Emma and Ray learn how to provide for the rest of the escapees that followed her and Ray away from the Grace Field House. After spending time learning to build weapons and forage for food, Emma and Ray are able to go back out into the demon-infested world with the skills they need to survive.

3 A Separate Human World Exists Apart From The Demon's World

Promised Neverland S2E2 Mujika and kids

After Ray and Emma are saved by a pair of friendly demons, they are finally able to educate themselves on the true scope of the world they find themselves in. While most fans were expecting The Promised Neverland to be set in an apocalyptical future where humans are used exclusively for food, it is revealed that a separate world exists where humans live in peace amongst themselves.

While it has yet to be confirmed that this separate world actually exists, the fact that humanity has not been defeated by the demons shifts the plot just enough to offer fans hope. If William Minerva is any clue, this separate world may be full of allies, giving Emma and Ray a much better chance of combating the demons that rule over the world they are trapped in.

2 The Year-Long Time Skip In The Middle Of Season 2 Twists Surviving Into Thriving

Opening Sequence _ Season 2

After being chased away from a shelter built by William Minerva in season 2 of The Promised Neverland, a year passes before viewers are given the chance to see Emma, Ray, and the rest of the Grace Field House "goods" again.

This time skip comes out of nowhere and left a number of viewers scratching their heads in confusion when Season 2, Episode 5 dropped. When the fourth episode of the second season ended, viewers were left to believe that Emma and her family were back to fighting for their life. Instead, when viewers returned for episode five, the plot had shifted to show a group of survivors that have weathered the outside world for an entire year.

1 Norman Not Only Survived His Adoption Day But Thrived

Promised Neverland S2E7 norman

Season 2, Episode 5 didn't just shock viewers with a time skip, it also brought Norman back from the dead. Or rather, it revealed that Norman was never truly killed by the demons when his adoption day was moved up back in season 1 of the anime.

Though fans may have predicted that Norman was still alive, the fact that he was thriving in this new world comes as an absolute shock. Just when Emma and Ray are at the end of their rope, Norman appears with a plan to save all the children trapped inside the farms. Not only is Norman prepared for the future, but he has also spent the last year saving other children from the farms while Ray and Emma have been struggling just to stay alive. Even if his survival wasn't a surprise, his success since leaving Grace Field House seems too good to be true.
