The following contains spoilers for the first two episodes in Season 2 of Primal, now available on Adult Swim.

As Season 2 of Primal kicked off, Spear and Fang found themselves navigating treacherous and uncharted territory. They took to the high seas as Spear wanted to get Mira back from slavers, thinking maybe this could be his second shot at a human family. Unfortunately, the ocean wasn't too kind, with a storm and giant shark almost taking the duo out in Episode 1, "Sea of Despair."

Luckily, they survived, with the second episode, "Shadow of Fate," finding them washed ashore on a mysterious island. Sadly, they were separated, which resulted in each experiencing an emotional side-quest of their own. Unfortunately, when they did find each other again, a brutal kill occurred that left Fang absolutely broken in a massive way.

Fang killed her friend in Primal after warring with a tribe

Fang found a red dinosaur of similar build on the island, but unlike her past when she had to fight off other predators, the two became friends. They hunted and such, acknowledging a bond that seemed to hint they were the only two on the island. However, things went off the rails when they stumbled across a small village.

A war broke out with Celtic-esque tribe, but the shocking twist was these people were the ones taking care of Spear. When Spear washed ashore, it took both parties a while to trust each other, but he acclimated after he realized the tribe really did want to help heal his wounds. He even bonded with a little dog there, once more reminding him of the utopia he lost when his family got killed.

Fang killed her friend in Primal after warring with a tribe

As a result, Spear wanted to kill the new dino to protect the tribe, but Fang tried to stop both. She didn't want either murdering each other, as they were the only beings left that she loved. But their carnal nature couldn't be quelled, with Spear and the dino attacking each other in brutal fashion. They pushed aside Fang, wounding each other terribly, especially as Spear was infuriated after seeing the damage done to the village.

The dino got the upper-hand, though, but when it was about to devour Spear, Fang kicked it off a hill and onto some spikes, skewering it. It was heartbreaking seeing it staring at Fang before it died, feeling betrayed. Fang slowly sauntered off after, head dropped and despondent, because she knew Spear still had the possibility of finding Mira, whereas she was most likely destined to be alone after losing her own family back in Season 1.

Despite the tribe asking him to stay, Spear left too, feeling like he owed Fang a debt. Ultimately, it has fans wondering how their relationship will change and if Fang will ever resent him at some point, as it does feel like their time together is more about Spear finding his utopia. Had Spear and the new dino listened, maybe they could have become a trio, but all that's left is for Fang to pick up the pieces and wonder what if.

Created by Genndy Tartakovsky, Primal debuts new episodes Thursdays at 12 am EST on Adult Swim, with episodes released on HBO Max the following day.
