Actor Amber Midthunder went through a phase of severe self-doubts before tackling the lead role in Prey, the hit Predator prequel.

In an interview with Teen Vogue, Midthunder explained she was in tears even over just the possibility of landing the part of Naru, a young 18th-century Comanche healer who would rather be a hunter and ends up proving herself against a vicious enemy from outer space. She pointed out they "were not excited tears, they were scared, anxiety tears." She said the project felt so big "that I was like, I don't want to do it. I just want to stay home and let somebody else do it. Please let someone else do this movie."

She acknowledged that this reaction was at odds with the tough characters she often portrays on screen. "It's funny because I really most often am scared of everything." However, like Naru, she likes a challenge and appreciates the rewards. "It's terrifying to go out into the world and do things. I think what I've learned is that every single time I've done something that has scared me, I've walked out with a huge set of skills for myself."

Prey was an instant ratings success for streamer Hulu and its international distributor Star and went on to become the best-reviewed film of the series. While 20th Century Fox had tried for decades to turn the original 1987 Predator starring Arnold Schwarzenegger into a blockbuster franchise, none of its three sequels performed to expectations. Now, with the franchise more popular than it has been in a long time, Prey director Dan Trachtenberg has confirmed he has ideas for a sequel, although no official announcement has been made. Midthunder has expressed interest in reprising her role.

Prey's Depiction of Native Americans

Beyond Prey, Midthunder is best known from her recurring roles in the critically acclaimed Marvel series Legion and the sci-fi drama Roswell, New Mexico, which ran for four seasons on the CW. Being of Native American descent on her father's side, Prey's portrayal of Comanche culture and the reaction of the Native American community was her main concern when accepting the role in the Predator franchise.

She previously stated, "I feel like that's who the movie was for and that's what the movie was about, so to have it come out in that way, and to have Comanche people respond well, and to have Native people, in general, respond well, was a huge sigh of relief."

Prey is currently streaming on Hulu.
