Free Comic Book Day is nearly here, and the offering from Toronto-based Chapterhouse Comics features, appropriately enough, Captain Canuck -- with the start of a new "Year One" story co-written by comics newcomer and "Man Seeking Woman" star Jay Baruchel.

Baruchel joins returning "Captain Canuck" writer Kalman Andrasofszky for the story, which is said to be the first of a three-part tale and is illustrated by Marcus To, recently of "Joyride" and "Nightwing," along with a cover by David Finch. The issue also includes a "Die Kitty Die" back-up story, from Archie Comics vets Dan Parent and Fernando Ruiz.

"Captain Canuck is a true Canadian icon and it is a humble honor to be involved in helping to shape the next generation of Canuck sagas for a new generation of readers and fans, as well as the die-hards that have followed Cap on his journey from the beginning," Baruchel said in a press release. "Chapterhouse is doing very awesome stuff as they breathe new life into the world of Canadian comics. I am proud to be joining their ranks in this incredible adventure as we work hard to bring exciting stories and classic heroes to life for readers across Canada."

Fitting the typically busy day of signings for writers and artists, most of the creators of Chatperhouse's FCBD issue have appearances slated for Free Comic Book Day: Baruchel and Andrasofszky are scheduled to sign on Saturday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Page & Panel: The TCAF Shop in Toronto; Parent will sign from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Main Street Comics in Middletown, New York; and Ruiz will sign 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Dewey's Comic City in Madison, New Jersey.

CBR has a preview of Chapterhouse's FCBD 2017 "Captain Canuck" issue and the "Die Kitty Die" story, available for free this Saturday, May 6, at participating comic book stores.

"Sur Saray" is a Year One story set during Tom Evans' time serving in the Afghanistan war. Tom has returned to active duty after going AWOL to rescue his brother from Site ALEPH, but his unit, the PCE Squad, is folded into an unscrupulous mercenary platoon. Frustrated by the injustices he's witnessing on a daily basis, Tom begins slipping away by night, using his new powers to right the street-level wrongs that the military is too unwieldy to effectively address. This tale is the perfect lead-in to the much-anticipated return of Captain Canuck in his own regular series later this summer. [ALL AGES]
