Prey, a prequel movie to Predator (1987), is skipping theaters in favor of going directly to streaming.

Variety confirmed the 20th Century Studios film will stream exclusively on Hulu in the U.S. and on Star internationally in Summer 2022, making it the first movie in the Predator franchise to forgo a theatrical run. Disney announced Prey's title and premiere window during its Disney+ Day event to commemorate the streaming service's second anniversary and promote its upcoming original films and series, as well as those headed to Disney-owned platforms like Hulu.

Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane) directed Prey from a script by Patrick Aison (Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan). Its logline reads: “Set in the world of the Comanche Nation 300 years ago, the action-thriller follows Naru, the skilled warrior who fiercely protects her tribe against a highly evolved alien predator.”

Indigenous American actor Amber Midthunder (Legion) stars as Naru, a young Native American woman who seeks to “prove her worth as a warrior [and] certainly gets her chance when she comes face to face with the most dangerous hunter of all, the other-worldly predator," per the character's official description. Cinematographer Jeff Cutter confirmed the cast also includes Dakota Beavers and Dane DiLiegro back in September when he announced that production has formally wrapped on Prey (which was going under the working title Skulls at that time).

"[Prey] goes back to what made the original Predator movie work. It's the ingenuity of a human being who won't give up, who's able to observe and interpret, basically being able to beat a stronger, more powerful, well-armed force," teased producer John Davis in July. "It actually has more akin to The Revenant than it does any film in the Predator canon. You'll know what I mean once you see it," added producer John Fox.

In addition to being a prequel, Prey is the first Predator film developed since Disney bought Fox's movie and TV assets in 2019, as well as the first since Shane Black's The Predator earned lackluster reviews on its way to disappointing at the box office a year earlier. However, it's unclear what effect (if any) The Predator's performance had on Disney's decision to pass on giving Prey a theatrical exclusive run before its streaming launch.

Prey arrives on Hulu in Summer 2022.
