Preacher Season 2 Trailer Teases Origin of Herr Starr

The second season of Preacher has doubled down on blood, booze, and blasphemy. The series also has a renewed focus on villains, including the minions of hell and the Saint of Killers. While the main villain of the comics, Herr Starr, has only been hinted at so far, a new trailer for the second season promises much more of him in the coming episodes.

The trailer kicks off the Saint of Killers mumbling his way through a drink of whiskey -- but then we get the needle drop, as Bell Biv DeVoe assures us that "That Girl is Poison." Instantly, the trailer moves from a typical modern western to a zany collection of patented Preacher insanity.

In the comics, Herr Starr is one of the leaders of The Grail, a secret religious organization that manipulates world politics, and protects religiously significant figures. This includes a bulimic anti-pope, and the inbred descendants of Jesus Christ himself. As the comics continue, Starr gets more and more mutilated, and more and more unhinged.

So far, those things are barely hinted at on the show, but actor Pip Torrens captures Starr unbelievably well. He's simultaneously intimidating and pathetic, carrying an air of gravitas while also seeming like an overgrown moody teenager. To paraphrase Starr himself at the end of the trailer, he needs to be seen to be believed.

Preacher follows the bizarre adventures of Jesse (Dominic Cooper), Tulip (Ruth Negga) and the Irish vampire Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun) on their road trip to find God. It is produced by Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg and Sam Caitlin, and new episodes air on AMC, Mondays at 9pm ET.
