Scrubs star Donald Faison is joining The CW's live-action take on The Powerpuff Girls. The CW's Powerpuff will show the lab-grown superhero sisters in their late 20s, resentful of wasting their youth crime-fighting and distanced from their father, Professor Utonium.

After The CW announced Faison in the starring role of Professor Utonium in Powerpuff, Faison took to Instagram to celebrate, posting a photo of him and his cartoon counterpoint with the caption, "I tried so hard not to FLEX but I can’t help it. I’m so excited!

Faison's take on Utonium will explore a "quirky, debonair, and a pinch narcissistic" scientist who has decided -- amidst a mid-life crisis -- to repair his relationships with his daughters. However, after spending their childhood fighting crime, Blossom (Chloe Bennet), Bubbles (Dove Cameron) and Buttercup (Yana Perrault) have become disillusioned and have varying takes on how they identify with their superhero past and what role -- if any -- they want their father to have in their lives going forward. Faison's character will be the heart of the show.

In August 2020, The CW's live-action take on the cartoon classic was announced. Its lead casting for the now-grown superhero women came in early March 2021 -- revealing also how differing the sisters' lives will be. Blossom is seeking to become a hero again, after battling her own childhood trauma. Bubbles is more interested in fame than necessarily being a hero. And, last, but certainly not least, Buttercup wants to just live life anonymously.

Sleepy Hollow's Heather Regnier will co-write and co-executive produce alongside Jennifer's Body writer Diablo Cody. Berlanti Productions' Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and David Madden will also produce along with Warner Bros. Television.

Created by Craig McCracken, The Powerpuff Girls debuted on Cartoon Network in 1998 and was produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions for the first four seasons and Cartoon Network Studios for the remaining two. The series centers on three superpowered, kindergarten-aged girls -- Bubbles, Blossom and Buttercup -- who live in the fictional suburb of Townsville, USA with their father, Professor Utonium, who creates them by accidentally adding "Chemical X" to a mixture intended to spawn the perfect little girls. The three pint-sized heroes use their impressive array of abilities to battle such recurring foes as Mojo Jojo and Him.

Powerpuff stars Chloe Bennet, Dove Cameron, Yana Perrault and Donald Faison. The pilot has yet to receive a release date.
