The CW's controversial Powerpuff has drawn the ire of fans everywhere, despite the series' much ballyhooed and speculated-upon pilot still being unmade. This scandalous nature hasn't kept the show back, and it's been supposedly still in production since the summer. Unfortunately for those who wanted to watch it, this may be more fiction than fact.

The CW has had a bevy of upheaval in 2022, with the channel and much of its programming now on their final legs. Even some of the channel's top shows are coming to an end, with those now in charge looking to go in a different direction. Given all of this and the show's previously negative reception, it's highly likely that the live-action Powerpuff Girls reboot is dead on arrival.

The CW As Viewers Know It Is Headed Down the Drain

From the Arrowverse to Riverdale, Mark Pedowitz Saved The CW

In the past year or so, the fortunes of The CW have irrevocably gotten worse. The former deal needed to make shows such as those in the Arrowverse profitable had ended, and many of the entries in that shared universe were finished. Legends of Tomorrow was brought to an unceremonious end, and the same happened to the one-season wonder Naomi. The Flash is soon to enter its final season, and that's already happened for Stargirl. This culling of "expensive" superhero programming matches the ambitions of The CW's new owners, Nexstar.

Looking to change the channel's scope and target audience, Nexstar is looking for less narrative-driven material, namely anything that involves a sizable budget. This effort has even seen the dirt cheap favorite Whose Lines Is It Anyway? canceled, making it unlikely for any other pre-existing or planned content on The CW to materialize in the future. With this new landscape in mind, it's hard to see anywhere that Powerpuff would fit.

Powerpuff Was Already Hated Before It Ever Came Out

As mentioned, the planned ideas for The CW's Powerpuff were rather despised by those who caught wind of it. Concepts such as the Professor being essentially abusive, Bubbles having an OnlyFans account and the general vibe of the series were the antithesis of the franchise, with the ideas coming off almost as a parody of The CW's usual fare. Add in the fact that the series looked far too cheap to do the property justice, and it's no surprise that many scoffed at what was supposedly still to come.

With hit shows (and former favorites) canceled left and right by the rotting corpse of The CW, it's highly unlikely that the network's new owners would green-light something that already had every target on its back. Likewise, for as cheap and low budget as its scope may have seemed, it's likely still too expensive for the turnkey programming that Nexstar seems to want. On top of that, it has to finish being revamped from the ground up, especially after star Chloe Bennett left the series.

This all points to the idea that, despite what those working on it may have said, Powerpuff is a project that will never be made. At most, it might get a pilot, but it's not very likely to get a full-series order on what remains of The CW. With live-action clearly not the medium for the property -- at least not when cheaply done -- perhaps it's best to let Powerpuff be forgotten and let the upcoming animated reboot bring the girls to a new generation of viewers.
