We've seen a number of different iterations of the X-Men over the years, with the team undergoing quite a few line-up changes. The upcoming event series House of X and Powers of X will relaunch the X-Men under the guidance of Jonathan Hickman, with new series to follow the event as it brings the X-Men back to the forefront of the Marvel Universe.

With a new reboot of the X-Men on the way, that means we are bound to see yet another new roster. And as the X-Men have grown, matured, and continued to grow in power, it's likely we might see one of the most powerful X-Men rosters ever. But until then, we can take a look back at the various iterations of Marvel's merry mutants to see which team is the most powerful.

10 FIRST CLASS

The original class of the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters had only five students under the guidance of Professor Charles Xavier, a mutant with powerful telepathic abilities. Those five students - Scott Summers, Jean Grey, Bobby Drake, Hank McCoy, and Warren Worthington III - would become the first class of the X-Men, creating a legacy that would carry on for decades.

While the original five X-Men were powerful mutants, they were untrained in the use of their abilities which were also still growing, in the case of some students like Jean and Bobby. The team's power levels would be increased by the addition of Cyclops' brother Havok and his girlfriend Polaris, though the series would be canceled before the First Class could fully develop.

9 GIANT-SIZE

The team that first appeared in Len Wein and Dave Cockrum's Giant-Size X-Men #1 would also be just as easily remembered as the Chris Claremont/John Byrne team, who together told some of the most iconic X-Men stories ever, from Days of Future Past to the Dark Phoenix Saga.

The roster gained a few new members during this particular iteration of the team, though the core group of Cyclops, Wolverine, Storm, Colossus, and Nightcrawler would form a powerful unit that helped keep mutantkind safe for years while also creating a foundation of mutants that would feature in almost every future roster of the team.

8 OUTBACK

The X-Men were divided after heavy events like the Mutant Massacre and Inferno had brought the team to a new low. After the Fall of the Mutants saw the main X-Men team killed and resurrected, they settled in the Outback for a short but memorable period of time.

The Outback team consisted of Wolverine, Storm, Havok, Colossus, Rogue, Psylocke (in her pre-ninja body), Longshot, and Dazzler, and is a criminally underappreciated roster of the X-Men. They may not have dealt with huge scale threats like some of the other rosters on this list, but the Outback team had some serious attitude.

7 REVOLUTION

Easily one of the least popular rosters of the X-Men came after the event "The Twelve," which saw the team broken after Cyclops was forcibly merged with Apocalypse and mutant powers across the world were temporarily negated. The "Revolution" event saw the return of Chris Claremont to the X-Men after his high-profile departure in the 90s, but fans had trouble getting on board.

Rogue led her own team of X-Men, which included Colossus, Shadowcat, Psylocke (with telekinesis), Nightcrawler, Archangel, Cecilia Reyes and Thunderbird (II). Gambit's team featured Phoenix (without telekinesis), Cable, Beast, Storm, and Bishop. This combined team with full access to their abilities would be much higher on the list, but their short run never saw a full-powered team.

6 XX

Writer Brian Wood launched a new volume of X-Men in 2013 that featured an all-female squad of X-Men, which included some serious heavy hitters. The initial team consisted of Storm, Rachel Grey, Rogue, Psylocke, Kitty Pryde, M (Monet St. Croix), and Jubilee (with vampire powers).

Almost every member of this iteration of the X-Men was at the peak of their abilities, and the squad benefitted from having multiple leaders on the team. While the all-female squad only lasted for a couple of years, they proved themselves to repeatedly be one of the most well-rounded and powerful rosters of the X-Men.

5 MAGNETO'S UNCANNY X-MEN

Magneto is best known as one of the X-Men's greatest enemies, but he has also been a member and even led the team a couple of times over the years. The X-Men underwent a number of changes following the events of Avengers vs X-Men, and then again with AXIS, which saw a number of heroes and villains inverted in a battle that heavily featured Magneto.

After AXIS, Magneto put together a team of X-Men that included Psylocke, Archangel (under Psylocke's control), Sabretooth (inverted to good-ish), M (bonded with her vampiric brother Emplate), Mystique, and Fantomex. They dealt with bigger threats that required more threatening X-Men, but they crashed and burned before being taken over briefly by Psylocke.

4 X-MEN RED

When the original Jean Grey returned to life in the pages of Phoenix Resurrection, she returned to a new world that still hated and feared mutants. Jean, at her most powerful when not possessed by the Phoenix Force, began to gather a team of mutants to help her build a new mutant nation.

X-Men Red featured a few classic X-members like Nightcrawler and Gambit, along with powerhouses like Namor and Gentle. Wolverine (X-23) and Honey Badger only increased the team's lethality, but it was new mutant Trinary and her ability to control technology that pushes Jean's team so high on the list.

3 NEW X-MEN

After the failure of Claremont's return to the X-Men in the "Revolution" event, the team was sent in a brand new direction by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely, Ethan Van Sciver, Marc Silvestri, and more. The new leather-clad team of mutants was a far cry from the blue and yellow flashy superheroes seen previously.

Morrison's X-Men featured Charles Xavier alongside Cyclops, Jean Grey, Wolverine, Beast, and Emma Frost, who was brought onto the team during Morrison's run. This powerful team was bolstered by newcomer Xorn (secretly Magneto, though later retconned) and an odd but powerful collection of new mutants like the Stepford Cuckoos and Quentin Quire.

2 BLUE AND GOLD

One of the most iconic eras of X-Men came in the 90s, thanks to Chris Claremont and Jim Lee. After the "Muir Island Saga" left the X-Men with a huge roster, the team was split into two strike forces known as the Blue and Gold teams.

Cyclops led the Blue team which featured Wolverine, Gambit, Rogue, Beast, and Psylocke. Storm's Gold team included Jean Grey, Archangel, Iceman, Bishop, and Colossus. Together both squads feature some of the biggest players the X-Men have ever seen and would wipe the floor with the majority of the other assembled rosters on this list. Except for...

1 EXTINCTION TEAM

Cyclops' Extinction Team of X-Men from Marvel Comics

During the "Utopia" era, the majority of the mutant race was gathered on the island refuge of Utopia, under the leadership of Cyclops. As the mutant race struggled to survive, Scott Summers put together what he called his "Extinction Team," which would bring together the most powerful X-Men to protect Utopia.

Cyclops led the Extinction Team, which also included Magneto, Storm, Colossus (with the power of the Juggernaut), Magik, Emma Frost, Hope Summers, Namor, and Danger. The combined power of the team is off the charts, and they were only torn apart by the cosmic power of the Phoenix Force during Avengers vs X-Men.
