It's been said that a sword is only as good as the person wielding it, and while that is almost always true, but there is an exception to be made when the sword in question has a mind of its own. In the Mighty Morphin Power Rangertelevision series as well as the comics by Boom! Studios, the sentient sword, Saba, can be seen fighting alongside the Power Rangers against their biggest foes.

Saba's origins in the Power Rangers Universe aren't directly stated and vary from the television show to the comics. Saba is an enchanted shortsword with a curved blade and the head of a white tiger on the hilt. While the most interesting part of Saba is that it is intelligent and can speak, it can do much more than that and is shown to be able to fly, summon the powerful White Tigerzord, and shoot lasers from its eyes.

White Power Ranger Saba

In the episode "White Light", the Rangers fight Lord Zedd and are hopelessly outmatched until Tommy Oliver, the Green Ranger, undergoes a transformation and becomes the White Ranger. Zordon states that it was Tommy's courage and strength that made him the obvious choice to become this new Ranger. As the White Ranger, Tommy becomes much stronger than before and is also gifted Saba from Zordon. With Saba and the White Tigerzord, the Rangers win the day and Tommy becomes the new leader of the Power Rangers.

The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers comics series released by Boom! Studios shows another introduction of Saba in the alternate world of Lord Drakkon. In Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #11 by Kyle Higgens, Hendry Prasetya, Matt Herms, and Ed Dukeshire, Tommy and Billy accidentally wind up in Lord Drakkon's world and are almost captured by the Mastadon Sentries. As they run away, the two hear a distant voice coming from behind a closed door inside a cave nearby. Tommy jumps down to see the source of the voice and after opening the door to the abandoned power chamber, finds Saba.

They attempt to flee from the Sentries again but are cornered by Lord Drakkon himself, who shocks the characters and the readers by revealing himself as Tommy's alternate self -- an incredibly powerful Green/White Ranger hybrid. Saba then summons the White Tigerzord and allows the group to escape safely. Like in the television series, Tommy becomes much more powerful when aided by Saba and the Rangers succeed in taking Drakkon's powers away and defeating him. Tommy refuses to fight him, and Drakkon jumps off a cliff to his presumed death.

Later in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #24, Billy, the Blue Ranger, discovers that Drakkon somehow survived the fall and has been captured and locked up in Grace Sterling's Promethea complex. The Rangers are understandably shocked to see that Drakkon is not just alive, but is being kept by the people they trusted. As they are deciding what to do about the situation, Saba takes it upon himself to visit the tyrant. Saba faces Drakkon and says, "I have seen firsthand what you are capable of... I cannot stand idly by while you sit... biding your time" and then attempts to kill Drakkon with an eye laser.

This, however, backfires terribly as Drakkon dodges the beam and uses it to break free of his chains. Drakkon then grabs Saba and rips its head clean off. Using the power of the saber, Drakkon is able to teleport and leave his prison. Being the only character from Drakkon's version of Earth, Saba knows just how evil Tommy Oliver becomes, so it felt there was no other choice but to end it all. Saba had the best of intentions, of course, but it's his sentience and heart for humanity that led to the mistake of trying to kill Drakkon alone. Now, Drakkon is loose again in the world, and the Rangers no longer have their superpowered sword companion to help them.
