WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Mighty Morphin #4 by Ryan Parrott, Marco Renna, Walter Baiamonte, Katia Ranalli, and Ed Dukeshire, on sale now.

The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers have been in over their heads lately, only narrowly surviving their encounters with the Dark Rangers and their Terrorzords thanks to the intervention of the new, mysterious Green Ranger. While they don't know who is behind the helmet, they're more than aware of how powerful this Green Ranger is, having watched them take on Lord Zedd and win single-handedly.

Unfortunately, that earlier victory came at the cost of supercharging the Rangers' most feared nemesis, and Zedd has taken hold of Angel Grove with his newfound powers. If the Rangers' hometown ever needed a glimmer of hope, it needed one now, and the new Green Ranger just gave the town one by unmasking himself and revealing his identity as the group's old friend Matthew Cook in Mighty Morphin #4.

Matthew Cook Green Ranger

First introduced in 2017's Go Go Power Rangers #1 by Ryan Parrott, Dan Mora, Raoul Angulo, and Ed Dukeshire, Matthew was originally one of the Rangers' best friends, and he even dated Kimberly for some time, while completely unaware of the group's dual identities. However, his personal relationships strained under the Rangers' constant unexplained disappearances, and things only getting worse when Matt was kidnapped and tortured by Rita Repulsa. While Matt was able to escape the villain and make it back to Earth in one piece, he continued to suffer from the trauma. Matt figured out who the Rangers really were and confronted them about it, giving them the chance to come clean and re-earn his support. Because of the Rules of the Ranger, they were unable to acknowledge what he already knew, so Matt turned his back on them. However, he eventually came around and reconciled as best he could with Kimberly and the others, and has stayed supportive of them ever since.

Unbeknownst to them, Matthew has been giving the Rangers a lot more support than they realized recently. Since late last year, Matthew has popped up as the new Green Ranger to help the Rangers on the various missions.

After being lured into a trap in Mighty Morphin #4, the Rangers were quickly overpowered by Lord Zedd's new Chaos Putties, who were fueled by the Green Chaos Energy that he had lent to his Dark Rangers and that he now commands personally. The Green Ranger, who has proven himself to be more than capable time and time again, didn't stand a chance against this latest breed of enemy foot soldier, due to his own reliance on the same exact power source. Once the Rangers had finally regrouped, the Putties did the same, merging together to form a terrifying and towering version of their former selves.

Calling in their Megazords didn't help the Power Rangers even the playing field much, with the Green Ranger himself taking yet another loss, this time at the hands of Lord Zedd personally. After the Rangers are forced to retreat, Zedd cuts Angel Grove off from the outside world entirely with an energy barrier and intends to reshape it in his own brutal image.

All that the Rangers and their allies can do is watch as the green veil is dropped over the city and fear for the worst. The citizens of Angel Grove are used to giant monster attacks, but they're also used to the Power Rangers saving the day, which is not going to happen any time soon. Inside the Command Center, Alpha picks up a signal being sent from within the city, and it's broadcasting to everywhere and anywhere that can receive it. On-screen, the Green Ranger presents himself to the world, imploring the residents of the city to stay indoors while he and his companions work on breaching the shield they're all trapped behind. In a display of transparency that has always been rare among the Rangers, he tells people that he too is scared of the situation. He also promises not to abandon them, and to prove it he breaks one of the few steadfast rules that exists among all Power Rangers by taking off his helmet for the public to see.

Now that he's been unmasked as the latest Green Ranger working under the purview of Grace Sterling, it seems that the Green Ranger has decided to put the power in the hands of the people himself. Matt has been critical of the way the Power Rangers operate in the past, though not nearly as much as Grace herself, so it only makes sense that he would jump at the chance to try and do the right thing in what he believes is the right way. While he's been a phenomenal new ally to the Mighty Morphin team so far, he's about to face a public trial by fire in a way that few Rangers have before, and the coming days will either break the new Ranger or set him up to be the team's next great hero.
