When you hear the name Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers, you may experience a feeling of nostalgia. However, if you look up some of those old episodes online, you might realize that the television show was pretty much the height of corniness. The fight scenes, the acting, and the ridiculous monsters (some of which were voiced by Bryan Cranston, by the way) all added up to create a show that was pretty great when you were in kindergarten, but really doesn't hold up to the standards you may have now. However, the Rangers have lived on in comic book form, with Boom! Studios creating a truly deep, fully fleshed out story about the original Rangers that we all know and love. If you thought that the Power Rangers were just a bunch of teens (with attitude) fighting monsters, these stories will change your mind.
The entire storyline of the comics eventually leads to the huge crossover event, “Shattered Grid,” which features Rangers from every generation working together to fight a common enemy. There are wins, losses, fatalities, and sacrifices, making the comic storyline a lot deeper and more meaningful than anything that ever appeared on the kids television show in the mornings. And while that might come as jolt to old school fans, the maturity of the comic is a more "grown up" take on the franchise that was much needed. If you don’t believe us, take a look at these 20 things only Power Rangers comic readers know about. They might make you want to go to your local comic book store and pick up some back issues!
20 TOMMY WAS NOT ACCEPTED RIGHT AWAY
If you remember the Green Ranger storyline from the original Power Rangers TV show, then you’ll know that transfer student Tommy was under the control of Rita Repulsa, and fought against the Ranger team. However, he was eventually defeated and Rita’s spell was broken. Tommy joined the team and essentially became the MVP of the Power Rangers.
In the Boom! Power Rangers comic series, however, Tommy joining the team had its share of complications. While he had shown that he was no longer under Rita’s influence, the team was not quick to fully accept him. Tommy also suffered from hallucinations of Rita and struggled with his own identity for a long time.
19 THEY FOUGHT AN ALTERNATE TOMMY
The Power Rangers have had their share of enemies, but none of them have been more powerful or threatening as Drakkon. In the Boom! Comics series, it is revealed that in an alternate universe, Tommy chose not to join the Power Rangers after he was defeated by Jason. Instead, he wandered from city to city, trying to find meaning for himself.
This led Rita Repulsa to make Tommy an offer: work with her to conquer the world in order to achieve world peace. Together, Rita and Drakkon defeated the Rangers and their Zords, but Drakkon was so consumed by his lust for power, that he killed Rita as well. He then took over as sole ruler of Earth.
18 ALPHA 5 IS ENDED BY LORD DRAKKON
Alpha 5 has always been the silliest member of the Power Rangers team. While he has always been loyal and helpful, his voice could definitely get on your nerves. However, Alpha 5’s story in the comics is a much more tragic state of affairs than anything he experienced on television.
When Lord Drakkon boards a ship carrying the Space Rangers, he threatens to kill the team’s friends if they do not surrender their morphers to him. Unfortunately, Red Ranger Andros defies this order and attempts to morph. Drakkon makes good on his promise and crushes poor Alpha 5’s head with one hand.
17 TEAMED WITH THE JUSTICE LEAGUE
Of all the team-ups the Justice League has seen throughout its tenure, getting to work with the Power Rangers was probably one of the craziest. In a joint venture between DC and Boom! Studios, the Rangers and the JLA team up when the Rangers find themselves warped into the DC Universe (at which point they immediately fight Batman).
It’s not just the Rangers who find themselves in a strange new world. Lord Zedd is teleported there as well after trying to attack the Rangers’ headquarters. Zedd eventually teams up with Brainiac in an attempt to destroy both worlds, threatening both Earth Zero and Angel Grove.
16 THERE WAS A COMIC BOOK SEQUEL TO THE 2017 MOVIE
Whether you loved it or hated it, there’s no denying that the Power Rangers movie released in 2017 hit a certain nostalgia factor for a segment of its audiences. It was at the very least popular enough for people to theorize about what a sequel could possibly explore. Luckily, the people clamoring for more of this Power Rangers universe got what they asked for.
The sequel comic to the film, titled Saban’s Power Rangers: Aftershock deals with the aftermath of the attack on Angel Grove. The story also finds the new Rangers trying to find their footing as a team. If there is a sequel to the film, it will be interesting to see if it takes any cues from this story.
15 THE RANGERS ARE SWITCHING THEIR COLORS
As anyone who grew up watching Power Rangers knows, the team’s colors are an important part of their history. Even though they have sometimes seemed questionable (the black Power Ranger is black, the yellow Power Ranger is Asian), the color scheme has never changed. However, in upcoming issues of Go Go Power Rangers, the team will all be switching colors and weapons.
The change up was announced at Power Morphicon, during the "Boom! Studios Presents: Shattered Grid and Beyond" panel. So far, no information has been given as to why the Rangers have changed their colors, but one thing is for sure: none of the Rangers look out of place or uncomfortable in their new duds.
14 EVERY RANGER TEAM WORKED TOGETHER
Crossover events are one thing, but to bring together every single Power Ranger team into one storyline? Well, that’s a whole new level of craziness. However the Power Rangers storyline “Shattered Grid” managed to do it. The incredible crossover event was the final chapter in the Boom! Studios Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers storyline.
“Shattered Grid” takes place across a bunch of different universes, and involves things like superpowered Ranger sentries, massive Zord battles, and several characters meeting their untimely demise. It’s an absolutely epic storyline that could never have been told in the Power Rangers television show, and it’s totally changed the landscape of the Power Rangers comics.
13 THERE WAS A POWER RANGERS TEAM IN 1969
We all might have thought that the original five Power Rangers we know and love were the first team to wear the colors. Oh how wrong we were! It turns out that Zordon actually recruited a different team of rangers to wear the red, pink, blue, black, and yellow all the way back in 1969, coinciding with the moon landing.
This reveal comes in issue 20 of Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers, when Grace Sterling, a billionaire tech CEO who has been helping the Rangers, reveals that she was once the Red Ranger, and led the team in a fight against Psycho Green, an evil Ranger who was released from suspended animation when Neil Armstrong first stepped on the moon.
12 ALL OF THE RANGERS BECAME GREEN
When it comes to the Power Rangers, one of the most identifiable traits of the team are their colors. However, at the end of issue eight of Mighty Moprhin’ Power Rangers, the Rangers all end up wearing green versions of their costumes. Tommy puts it best when he sees this and remarks, “Woah, that’s…..different."
The change comes as a result of the Rangers losing their powers. Tommy, who is still trying to prove himself to the team, offers up his own power to the rest of the Rangers. Even though this leaves him vulnerable, he is willing to do it, proving that he is willing to make sacrifices for the team.
11 FOUGHT A MONSTER WHO SPOUTED CONSPIRACY THEORIES
Throughout their time defending the Earth from Rita’s monsters, the Rangers have come up against some pretty ridiculous enemies. Remember when they were basically fighting a giant pineapple octopus that was disguised as a clown? Yeah, things could get weird.
However, the comic book series has introduced its own share of silly monsters. One of them was a giant sheep with the illuminati symbol on its chest named ‘Sheeple.’ As his name suggests, Sheeple is fond of spouting conspiracy theories during battle, such as “Earth is flat,” and “only one Olsen.” He also shouts that he is “spreading the word” and tells everyone they need to “wake up.”
10 BULK AND SKULL HAVE THEIR OWN ONGOING STORYLINE
Remember how on the Power Rangers TV show, Bulk and Skull were like the bullies of Angel Grove? They were always picking on people then being made to look foolish by the Ranger team. However, in the Power Rangers comics, Bulk and skull play a much more significant role in the storyline.
Bulk and Skull decide that they want to become Rangers at one point, even trying to defeat a putty. Obviously, they fail pretty hard and are sentenced to community service. Rita sees Bulk and Skull acting like jerks and makes a monster that they control. Despite being bit players in the show, Bulk and Skull become integral to the Rangers’ victory in “Shattered Grid” as well.
9 THERE IS AN EVIL ZORD
The Zords have always been an important part of the Power Rangers mythos. Not only are they integral to defeating giant monsters, but they also make for a great way to market toys for kids. That being said, the comics introduced a new Zord that was practically pure evil, known as Black Dragon.
Black Dragon sapped the Rangers of their powers, leading to the events of Tommy lending his power to the Ranger team. It turned out that Black Dragon was reconstructed from pieces of the Dragon Zord, and was in fact being controlled by Lord Drakkon. Things never got this dark on the show, but the comics really dig into the story of the Green Ranger.
8 RITA REPULSA TOOK CONTROL OF THE ZORDS
Speaking of Zords, they are typically only able to be controlled by the Rangers. In the comics, the Rangers even mention the fact that the Zords become one with their pilot (similar to the Jaegars of Pacific Rim). However, as anyone who watched the show knows, the Zords can do some serious damage. In the wrong hands, that could spell disaster.
That’s exactly what happens when Rita Repulsa takes control of the Zords in issue seven, after the Rangers have their powers drained from them. She uses the Zords to destroy cities worldwide. However, the Zords are eventually released form her control and taken over by the Rangers once again.
7 ZORDON WAS TRAPPED IN A SPACE-TIME WARP
Zordon has always been the glue that holds the Power Rangers team together, acting as almost a fatherly figure to the teenagers (though why he would specifically want teenagers “with attitude” seems like something no father would choose). However, when Rita takes control of the command center, Zordon is cast into a timeless void, where he drifts through space.
Eventually, he meets an alternate timeline version of himself, who tells Zordon about the reality where Tommy became Lord Drakkon and ruled over the Earth. This alternate Zordon passes away, and the main Zordon is brought into Drakkon’s timeline. It’s a pretty far cry from just being a floating face in a tube.
6 THE COINLESS
In Lord Drakkon’s timeline, the Power Rangers are defeated, and their powers are drained from them after Rita and Drakkon destroy the command center. These powerless Rangers from a resistance against Lord Drakkon called “the coinless.” Even Bulk and Skull become a part of the resistance, with Skull posing as a sentry in Drakkon’s army army in order to infiltrate his headquarters.
The Coinless protect whoever they can and they also guard an artifact that turns out to be Billy’s triceratops coin and morpher. The Coinless do everything they can within their abilities to fight against Lord Drakkon and the army ofRanger Sentries he created from the recovered coins and morphers.
5 A NEW MEGAZORD WAS FORMED BY FOUR RANGER TEAMS
In the “Shattered Grid” storyline, every Ranger team from across the universe is drawn together to stop Lord Drakkon. However, it wouldn’t be much of a Power Rangers story without a Megazord battle would it? Well, for this enemy, it took more than one Ranger team to make a Megazord powerful enough to win the battle.
The new Megazord is formed by the HyperForce, Dino Charge, Jungle Fury, and Zeo Ranger teams, and no one really seems sure of what to call it. Jason ends up giving it the name “Whatever-we’re-calling-it-Megazord", but the new Megazord is powerful enough to take on the Ranger sentries in battle.
4 JASON SACRIFICES HIMSELF
Even though the Rangers form a newer, stronger Megazord, there are still significant losses in the “Shattered Grid” storyline. One of those major losses comes in the form of Jason, the fearless leader of the Power Rangers, sacrificing himself to win an important battle. It’s an absolutely devastating loss for all of the Rangers, even if it does lead them to victory.
This event is thematically important to the entire "Shattered Grid" storyline, as an alternate timeline Jason goes on to say how important and meaningful sacrificing yourself can be for the greater good. Like we said, this story gets a lot deeper than any half hour of the Power Rangers TV show.
3 DRAKKON CREATED A NEW REALITY
This next bit of the “Shattered Grid” story is where things start to get really complicated (as if the story wasn’t complicated enough). Having fused himself with the Morphing Grid, which gives power to all of the Rangers across all realities, Drakkon first collapses the Coinless reality and then reforms it to something that suits him better.
In this reality, Drakkon appears to be living a normal life with his parents, who just so happen to be Zordon and Rita. It’s such a shock to see these three characters sitting in a cozy dining room and talking about Rita’s delicious "multiberry pie." The reality does not last though, as Tommy eventually causes Drakkon to destroy it.
2 TOMMY IS OFFED BY DRAKKON
In one of the most ssurprising moments of the entire “Shattered Grid” storyline, Tommy Oliver, who has spent the entire run of Power Rangers issues trying to prove himself to the team, is killed by Drakkon (who is an evil Tommy from the world of the Coinless). This end is extra sad as it comes after Kimberly and Tommy’s first date.
Despite Kimberly doing her best to fight off Drakkon with the help of the Pink Time Force Ranger, Jenn Scotts, Tommy ultimately perishes in Kimberly’s arms. As she weeps over his lifeless body, she utters three words that could break anyone’s heart: “don’t be gone.” The loss is taken just as hard by the rest of the Ranger team.
1 JASON IS GIVEN TOMMY'S DRAGON SHIELD
After the passing of Tommy, the entire Ranger team is obviously feeling the loss pretty hard. Even Zordon admits that there is nothing that can be done to save Tommy. Everyone on the team processes this loss in their own way, although it seems to hit Jason and Kimberly the hardest.
It is in this moment that the power of the Green Ranger, including Tommy’s Dragon Shield, is bestowed upon a tearful Jason. While this makes him the most powerful Ranger, it is a heavy burden to bear, as it comes at the cost of his friend and teammate. It’s truly emotional moment that would have never been pulled off as well on the TV show.
