The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers' oldest nemesis has claimed the most powerful artifact in the universe as her own.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #103 by writer Melissa Flores (The Dead Lucky) and artist Simona Di Gianfelice (Firefly) finds Lord Zedd recuperating within the eponymous heroes' Command Center following his devastating encounter with Mistress Vile, formerly Rita Repulsa. In her new form, the classic franchise villain is stronger than ever before, though that isn't the only thing giving her an edge. As Zedd explains, Rita has now claimed the Zeo Crystal for herself, something that any fan of the series knows could only spell doom for its heroes.

In the original television series, the Zeo Crystal was made of five smaller crystals, each of which acted as a successor to the first team's Power Coins. As such, each shard of the Zeo Crystal imbued one of the five Zeo Rangers with their abilities. In the comics, the Zeo Crystal has been reimagined as a particular type of ore which houses the raw power of the Morphin Grid within it. The very same Zeo Crystal which Mistress Vile now controls is also the same which caused the former Supreme Guardian Zophram to be transformed into the menacing Lord Zedd thousands of years ago.

Mistress Vile Unseats Lord Zedd

Apart from claiming the Zeo Crystal as her own since her return, Mistress Vile's reintroduction to the series has also seen her usurp Lord Zedd's throne. This has left him and many of his fellow Evil Space Aliens in the hands of the Power Rangers, who themselves have only recently overcome similarly overwhelming odds, including both the Eltarian invasion of Earth and the emergence of the ancient Death Ranger back-to-back.
