The following article contains spoilers from Action Comics #1051, on sale now from DC Comics.

Power Girl's new psionic skills may have seemed like a sudden addition to her arsenal, but that is actually the opposite of how she's decided to apply them. In "Head Like a Whole - Part One" from Action Comics #1051 (by Leah Williams, Marguerite Sauvage, and Becca Carey), it was revealed that Power Girl and Omen have been working together to find a way to use her new abilities in a more productive setting than combat. The two decided to work together as joint therapists helping heroes get through their trauma.

The nature of Power Girl's new powers means that she can handle the patient's subconscious reaction to therapy while Omen counsels them on a conscious level. In this way, therapy becomes easier for the patient as the involuntary reaction from the trauma is managed while they work through it with Omen. It also means that Power Girl will become a better version of the Sanctuary, the mental health facility the heroes of the DCU had set up to help recover from any emotional or mental damage caused by their jobs.

Power Girl's New Abilities Make Her the Perfect Therapist

Power Girl's New Job

While Power Girl now possesses telepathy, it is her ability to physically enter the mind of another that is truly notable. This allows her to literally fight any negative thoughts, nightmares, or subconscious reactions that might be causing them harm. Combined with Omen acting as a counselor in the real world, the patient they are helping suddenly has a less difficult time getting through the emotional pain than they would have without their help.

This is a vast improvement upon the Sanctuary, a mental health facility set up by the Justice League for other heroes to recover from trauma. While the concept was good in theory, the facility itself was poorly run. The Justice League left it being managed by artificially intelligent robots with the will of Batman, the compassion of Wonder Woman, and the honor of Superman. While these traits ensure good care, they can't replace the need for a proper therapist. Eventually, the Sanctuary's inability to help heroes resulted in it being shut down. Power Girl, may not be able to help as many people at the same time, but she ultimately employs a better method of healing because she is working with a mental health professional and using her gifts to ease the suffering of their patients.

Power Girl Has Finally Found Her Place in the DC Universe

Power Girl Can Help With Trauma

This effectively makes her the ideal solution for heroes dealing with trauma. Even more incredible is that it finally gives Power Girl a place within the DC Universe to call her own. As a native of Earth-2, she has struggled with making a place for herself in the main universe. Not only is this something that is unique to her, but it also makes a huge difference to the people she helps.

Through Power Girl, heroes have a genuinely effective outlet for their emotional burdens in the form of someone who they trust and respect. Her place in the DC Universe is no longer simply punching bad guys and then repeating the cycle of violence. Now, she gets to help break the hold that trauma has on her fellow heroes.
