With its first first television commercial for "Poltergeist," Fox manages to strike a balance between wonderfully retro -- "There are ghost stories," the narrator intones, "and then there's 'Poltergeist'" -- and decidedly modern. And it does so while keeping the scares fresh to an audience that already knows the story.

Directed by Gil Kenan and produced by Sam Raimi, the remake of the 1982 horror classic stars Sam Rockwell, Rosemarie DeWitt, Jared Harris, Saxon Sharbino, Jane Adams, Kyle Catlett and Kennedi Clements. It opens July 24.

Legendary filmmaker Sam Raimi (“Spider-Man,” “Evil Dead”, “The Grudge”) and director Gil Kenan (“Monster House”) contemporize the classic tale about a family whose suburban home is haunted by evil forces. When the terrifying apparitions escalate their attacks and hold the youngest daughter captive, the family must come together to rescue her before she disappears forever.
