There have been numerous ways in which people and Pokémon have met their demise in the Pokémon TV series and movies, including being burned alive, freezing to death in the depths of space, being eaten alive, and drowning.

The movies tend to be slightly more dramatic than the series and therefore feature more deaths and life-threatening situations. Often times, characters are only dead temporarily, but there is a fair few who have been killed off permanently, whether in events that happened thousands of years ago or in the present day. Not even Pokémon can escape the inevitability of death.

10 Several People And Pokémon Have Been Turned To Stone

A number of characters have had the fate of being turned to stone befall them in the TV series and movies. Ash is turned to stone when he gets caught in Mew and Mewtwo's crossfire in the first Pokémon movie, and several humans and Pokémon are petrified by Yveltal's Oblivion Wing in Diancie and the Cocoon of Destruction. In the main series, Yveltal is shown during a flashback petrifying people and Pokémon in "The Legend of X, Y, and Z!"

9 Ash And Pikachu Were Ghosted By Haunter

When Ash and Pikachu enter the Pokémon Tower in "The Tower of Terror," they come across Ghastly, Haunter, and Gengar. The three Pokémon are rather mischievous, and as a prank, Haunter pulls Ash's and Pikachu's spirits out of their bodies while they're unconscious so that they float in the air, allowing them to observe themselves lying motionless on the floor. Their spirits are eventually returned to their bodies, and they're brought back to life, but it must have been quite the out-of-body experience.

8 Ash Drowned Before Being Brought Back To Life

In Pokémon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea, Ash drowns trying to stop the Sea Temple from flooding. He has to place several crystals into a platform at the bottom of a flooded room, but he has trouble with the last crystal and is unable to place it before he drowns. He is later revived by Manaphy. He also almost drowns in "Battle Aboard the St Anne," the luxury cruise ship that sinks, but manages to makes it out alive.

7 Numerous People And Pokémon Were Killed By Meta Groudon

Meta Groudon is a corrupted, evil version of Groudon that appears in Jirachi: Wish Maker. In attempting to revive Groudon to get revenge on Team Magma for firing him, Butler, a magician and the main antagonist of the movie, instead creates a creature that only looks like Groudon but is in fact an evil monster.

Several Pokémon as well as Butler himself are destroyed by Meta Groudon, and despite later being revived by Jirachi, it must have been frightening to be faced with such power.

6 Pokémon Hunter J Crashed Into A Lake

In "The Needs of the Three!", Pokémon Hunter J attempts to capture the lake trio of Legendary Pokémon Azelf, Uxie, and Mesprit at Lake Valor on behalf of Team Galactic. After he initially succeeds and hands the lake trio over to Team Galactic, J's ship is hit with Uxie and Mesprit's Future Sight attacks, is set on fire, and crashes into a whirlpool that has formed before sinking into the depths of the lake, taking J, his crew, and his Pokémon all down with it.

5 Numerous People Were Absorbed By Red Blobs

In Lucario and the Mystery of Mew, the Tree of Beginning is a living organism that is home to many ancient Pokémon. The crystals inside the Tree of Beginning turn into red antibody blobs which proceed to engulf humans but not Pokémon. Ash, Max, May, Brock, Jessie, and James are all swallowed by the blobs but are later revived by Mew. Being rendered unable to breathe by one of these blobs must have been an uncomfortable and painful way to expire.

4 Team Magma Was Burned Alive By Primal Groudon

In the Pokémon Generations episode "The Vision," Team Magma admin Courtney has a vision of the future, in which she sees Primal Groudon unleashing a Solar Beam that destroys a chain of islands, as well as several members of Team Magma. Seeing such a colossal Pokémon rise up and unleash such a powerful move and not being able to do anything about it must have been terrifying for those Team Magma members, which included Tabatha and Maxie, the head of the organization.

3 Team Aqua Was Eaten Alive By Primal Kyogre

In "The Cavern," the 8th episode of Pokémon Generations, Archie, the head of Team Aqua, awakens a wild Kyogre and uses a Blue Orb to turn it into a Primal Kyogre in a misguided attempt to return the world to the way it once was.

The Pokémon goes on a rampage, and when Archie tries to get Primal Kyogre to listen to him, it instead sets its sights on him and his submarine, opening its mouth and baring its sharp teeth in preparation to eat him.

2 Many People And Pokémon Were Obliterated By AZ's Ultimate Weapon

AZ created the ultimate weapon 3,000 years before the events of X & Y. It is a large machine that resembles Floette's flower and was built to revive AZ's lost Pokémon and make himself invulnerable. The weapon was later used to destroy both sides of the great war, meaning the lives of countless humans and Pokémon were brought to an end because of this one machine. It must have been awful to have been a witness to such devastating power.

1 Ash Froze To Death On The Edge Of Space

In the Black and White Pokémon movies, Ash ventures to the Sword of the Vale, a castle at the top of a mountain. Ash finds himself trapped in the cellar of the castle, which rises higher and higher into the sky until it reaches space, where it's so cold and the air is so thin that Ash, hugging Pikachu and Victini in a vain attempt to keep them warm, can no longer breath. Victini revives him, but Ash must have thought he was really going to die.
