Weather effects play a large part in Pokémon battles. Pokémon can manipulate the weather to make it sunny or rainy, or they can stir up a hailstorm or sandstorm. Each of these effects alters certain moves and can trigger certain Pokémon abilities. Furthermore, there are moves and abilities that can cause these weather conditions.

The sunny day effect is particularly strong for Fire-Type Pokémon. It boosts the power of Fire-Type attacks while reducing the damage of Water-Type moves. This effect can be triggered by the Sunny Day move or the Drought ability. As a result, there are Pokémon that are only powerful in the sun.

10 Bellossom Is A Reliable Speedy Grass-Type Hitter

Bellossom Pokemon

Funnily enough, Grass-Type Pokémon tend to benefit most from the sunny day status effect. This is largely due to abilities like Chlorophyll, which doubles the Pokémon's Speed stat while sunny day is in effect. Bellossom is one such Pokémon.

Bellossom is a strong choice for a sunny team, as it gains a lot of endurance through moves like Giga Drain and Strength Sap, both of which heal Bellossom at the expense of an opposing Pokémon. On top of that, it can learn Synthesis, a self-healing move that is powered up in the sunlight.

9 Venusaur Has A Hidden Ability That Makes It A Solar-Powered Beast

Venusaur

Generation I starter Venusaur is another strong choice for a sunny day team, as its Hidden Ability is Chlorophyll. Venusaur has always been a bulky hitter. Solar Beam is a Special Attack Grass-Type move that takes a turn to charge before firing, but it hits immediately if the sunny day effect is in place. Venusaur can use Solar Beam.

It can also learn Weather Ball, and its effects change based on the weather —as one could guess from the name. It's a Fire-Type move in the sunlight and gives Venusaur a powered-up Fire-Type move for its arsenal.

8 Whimsicott Is A Multi-Talented Sunny Team Player

whimsicott from pokemon

Whimsicott is another Pokémon with the Chlorophyll ability, and that potentially makes Whimsicott another sweeper in a sunny day-themed team. However, it can serve a different role in the team with its Prankster ability.

Prankster gives status-changing moves priority, and that includes Sunny Day. This means Whimsicott could reset the sunny day effect if it expires before any other Pokémon could attack.

7 Ninetales Doesn't Just Thrive In The Sun, It Brings The Sun

Ninetales Pokemon

It's best to not even have to use a move to bring out the sunny day effect. That's where the Drought ability comes in, which puts a sunny day effect upon the Pokémon's arrival on the battlefield. Ninetales' Hidden Ability is Drought. This means that Ninetales isn't just at its most powerful in the sun but is more powerful because it can bring out the sun.

Ninetales can unleash powerful Fire-Type moves and Solar Beam that are even more powerful in the sunlight. It can boost those moves even further with the benefit of Special Attack-boosting moves like Nasty Plot.

6 Trevenant Can Replenish Its Berries In The Sunlight

Trevenant Pokemon Ash

Trevenant is a spooky Ghost and Grass-Type Pokémon that, despite its Ghost-Typing, actually wants to be out in the sunlight. Its Hidden Ability is Harvest, which has a 50% chance to restore a consumed berry. However, this is a 100% chance in the sunlight.

This is enough reason to drop Trevenant in a sunlight-based team, as it gives Trevenant some longevity on the battlefield. Unfortunately, it isn't an ideal choice to take advantage of Solar Beam given its low Special Attack stat though.

5 Heliolisk Is The Rare Electric-Type That Likes Playing In The Sun

Heliolisk Pokemon

Heliolisk is an outlier on this list, as it's an Electric and Normal-Type Pokémon. One of its abilities is Dry Skin, which actually reduces Heliolisk's HP and makes it weak to Fire-Type moves in the sunlight. However, Heliolisk has a Hidden Ability called Solar Power, which boosts Heliolisk's Special Attack by half in the sunlight. This, however, also has the drawback of Heliolisk losing HP every turn.

Fire-Type Pokémon have a weakness to Water-Type Moves, and Grass-Type Pokémon have a weakness to Flying-Type moves. Both of those types are weak against Electric-Type moves, which Heliolisk can unleash in spades. This makes Heliolisk with Solar Power a very powerful Pokémon in the sunlight.

4 Leafeon Has Two Abilities That Flourish In The Sunlight

Leafeon is another Grass-Type Pokémon that is most powerful when the sun is out, and it actually has two abilities that are relevant to the sunny day status. Its regular ability is Leaf Guard, which keeps Leafeon from being afflicted with status conditions in the sunlight. Its Hidden Ability is Chlorophyll.

This makes Leafeon a great choice for sunlight teams in both cases. The first ability means Leafeon could serve as a decent defender resistant to status conditions, and the second means Leafeon could take the field as a swift and powerful sweeper.

3 Cherrim Powers Up Its Teammates In The Sun

Three Sunshine Cherrim from Pokemon

Cherrim is a unique Pokémon, as it changes form in the sunlight and has an ability no other Pokémon has. Cherrim's ability is Flower Gift, which boosts the Attack and Special Defense of Cherrim and its ally Pokémon when the sun is out.

This means that Cherrim is really only useful at all when the sun is out, as its stats are nerfed badly when the sun is gone.

2 Torkoal Is Another Fire-Type That Can Summon The Sun

Torkoal on the battle field in the Pokémon Advanced Generations anime.

Torkoal is another Pokémon with the Drought ability, meaning it brings out the sunlight upon entering the battlefield. It's often the preferred choice over Ninetales, as Torkoal makes for a durable support Pokémon.

Torkoal can learn Rapid Spin to remove field hazards, Rest to restore its own health, and moves like Stealth Rock and Toxic to inflict damage to the opposing Pokémon.

1 Mega Charizard Y, The Most Powerful Sun-Summoner In Pokemon

Mega Charizard Y Pokemon

Mega Evolutions were phased out with the arrival of Generation VIII, but it's worth remembering the unbridled power of Mega Charizard Y. Charizard is already a Pokémon that is most powerful in the sunlight with its arsenal of Fire-Type moves and Solar Beam. Plus, Charizard's Hidden Ability, like Heliolisk, is Solar Power, so it gets a boost in the sunlight.

However, Mega Charizard Y was the ultimate Drought-inducing Pokémon. It's already an immensely powerful Pokémon as a Mega Evolution, but it's boosted further by its own innate ability. This was a devastating sweeper on sunlight-based teams.
