One might think that most of the Pokémon designers' creative juices have been spent on the Legendary Pokémon, which are typically more elaborate in design than non-Legendaries. There are plenty of regular Pokémon that have complex, interesting designs, however. With 8 generations' worth of Pokémon having been created, there are designs ranging from the stylish and elegant to the whacky and downright strange.

As the Pokémon series began life as a game, the designers were limited to what could be depicted on the Game Boy. However, as technology has advanced and it's become possible to render more complicated images on video game consoles, Pokémon designs have become much more complex and intricate.

10 Milotic's Complexity Is What Gives It Its Reputation As A Beautiful Creature

Milotic's smooth shape, the way its tail fans out at the end, and its long eyelash-like antennae all combine to give the Tender Pokémon a unique look. It has fins above its eyes that hang down by its side, resembling hair, and a red and blue diamond-shaped pattern on its tail. Milotic's beauty stems from its complexity being made to look elegant and classy.

9 Cresselia Is An Angelic-Looking Pokémon From Outer Space

No other Pokémon looks quite like Cresselia. It might look simplistic at first, but there's actually a lot going on with Cresslia's design. The rings around its body and the crescent moon shapes on its head give it a celestial look.

Where the rings stem from the front of its body, it looks like two paws connected as if in prayer, making the Lunar Pokémon look angelic. Its body is the shape of a swan and its soft pastel colors complement each other, while the pink oval on its head signifies intelligence, and its eyes have a knowing and mysterious look.

8 Xerneas Is A Mascot With Multicolored Antlers

Xerneas in front of tree in New Pokemon Snap

Xerneas is a Legendary Pokémon, and its look fits the bill. As the game mascot for Pokémon X, Xerneas's design needed to be striking and eye-catching, and it is. The blue fur on its stag-like body curves upward, but it's the antlers that make the design. They have numerous bumps and branches and can change color depending on whether Xerneas is in Active or Normal mode. In Active Mode they are multicolored, and they are light blue in Normal Mode. The X in Pokémon X is represented by its antlers.

7 School Form Wishiwashi Is A Large Fish Comprised Of Numerous Smaller Fish

School Form Wishiwashi dives in the water in Pokemon

While Wishiwashi in its Solo Form is just a simplistic-looking fish, when it transforms into its School Form, it becomes a lot more complex. Its School Form is made up of a lot of small Wishiwashi to resemble a large fish. The glowing blue eyes of the Wishiwashi are dotted around the various layers of the body, which is comprised of four different shades of blue, to look like screws or bolts holding it together. The smaller fish can be seen most prominently around its fins, eyes, and tail. It must have taken quite some time for the designers to fit all those fish together.

6 Zygarde Has Three Forms That Grow In Complexity

Pokemon Zygarde Different Forms Mutation

Zygarde can take three Formes: 10% Forme, 50% Forme, and Complete Forme. The 10% Forme Zygarde resembles a dog and has a relatively simple design. The 50% Forme resembles a serpent and is more complex, with a crown of black and green protrusions behind its head and several hexagonal markings dotted around its body. As might be expected, Complete Forme Zygarde is the most striking, with its humanoid body, mecha-like head, long tail, and large patterned wings with differing colors. On its abdomen are two green markings and a multicolored zigzag, resembling a face.

5 Sigilyph Is A Spooky Creature That's Hard To Pin Down

Upon seeing it for the first time, it may not be immediately apparent just what Sigilyph is. It has wings and a tail, but it doesn't look much like a bird. The motif on its wings and spherical body look vaguely like something found in Native American culture and kind of like a wind chime. It's spooky and mysterious-looking, with a black appendage sticking out of its body with a blue and white marking on it, resembling a third eye. Its distinctive look makes Sigilyph's of the most interesting designs of all Pokémon.

4 Cryogonal Resembles One Of The Most Complex Shapes Found In Nature

a group of Cryogonal in the sky, as seen in the Pokemon anime

Cryogonal is based on a snowflake, and it can't get much more complex than that. The Crystallizing Pokémon is made up of large hexagonal blocks of ice of varying shades of blue, with six triangular ice blocks attached to each points of the hexagon.

Cryogonal's face is frozen in an angry expression, its eyes (or possibly eyebrows) are angled upward in a frown, while its mouth is made up of a chain of ice that is turned downward.

3 Celesteela Is A Kimono-Wearing Bamboo Space Shuttle

Pokémon Celesteela on Crown Tundra artwork

Being an Ultra Beast, Celesteela needs an elaborate design. Part space shuttle, part bamboo shoot, the Launch Pokémon has two large detached arms that resemble rockets made out of bamboo, and a body draped in a kimono-like dress with numerous layers that starts off wide at the bottom and gradually gets thinner toward a very thin neck and tiny face. It has long, flowing hair and the horn on its head is similar to a drill bit. There's a lot going on with this design, and as a result, it's one of the whackiest out there.

2 Blacephalon Is A Debonair & Colorful Clown

Blacephalon Pokemon Ultra beast anime

An Ultra Beast that goes by the code name UB Burst, Blacephalon's removable head is made up of pink and blue dots, with two blue and pink stars with yellow pupils for eyes. It looks clownish, with balls on its feet and a thin torso. High heels, white frills around its wrists and neck, and its teardrop-shaped hands give it an air of refinement. It's one of the strangest and most colorful Pokémon there is.

1 Eternatus' Design Is So Complex That It Was Animated In 3D Rather Than 2D In The Anime

Eternatus

Eternatus's design is as striking as it is complex. The Gen VIII Legendary Pokémon looks like a skeletal other-worldly dragon from hell. Dark purple with red highlights, its lack of flesh and jagged skeleton give it a sinister appearance. Absorbing massive amounts of energy or using its signature move Eternabeam causes the Gigantic Pokémon to transform into Eternamax Eternatus, which brings about a drastic change in shape. It becomes serpent-like, with most of its body coiled up. Its head changes into a giant hand, and its entire body glows red. It's likely that the complexity of Eternatus's design meant that it was easier to animate it in 3D rather than 2D in the anime.
