Since Pokémon GO launched in 2016, the game has frequently updated its load screen. Typically, the single-frame art will celebrate the changing of the seasons, promote a new release or event, or celebrate a new year. The first load screen of 2021, by artist Jason Marino, has a special meaning behind it.

On New Year's Eve, Marino posted a Twitter thread explaining his vision for the new loading screen. He described it as "something [he] HAD to do" and shared a screenshot before going into details.

“Painting a loading screen isn’t about making a pretty image or an excuse to embrace my inner nerd," Marino tweeted. "Instead it’s an outlet, to have one loading bar moment with you. A moment to bring something positive and hopefully memorable. For this year it was a moment to bring HOPE. From the rising Phoenix to the passing storms. The light at the end of the tunnel and the start of a new journey (totally Pokémon Ep1)."

Marino cited the last year's influence on his Pokémon GO loading screen, as well: "2020 has been a year we’d like to forget. It has brought many 'OMG!' moments and taken us to some really low places. As a person who has been through a lot myself I can confidently say, with positive energy, dash of grit, and a bucket full of hope, there is no dark place/obstacle we can’t overcome! So I’m hopeful, there will be light at the end of this storm and hopefully, this loading screen reminds you of that too. To everyone around the world, keep those heads up and Happy New Year!”

From Ho-Ho flying in the distance, clearing away some storm clouds to bring in a rainbow, to two Litleos playing at the entrance to the cave, Marino's art lives up to his message. The image also shows a trainer seemingly emerging from a cave to see sunlight over the valley below, which is on point for the theme.

Pokémon GO has made some efforts to help players enjoy the game safely since the COVID-19 pandemic began, though the game recently adjusted bonuses again and it seems as if these safety measures won't be permanent -- even if they would be helpful for players in remote areas. Some have criticized the game for not adhering to pandemic safety guidelines. Hopefully, 2021 will be better than 2020, and Marino's art is a great way to usher in the new year.
