Throughout his journeys, Ash has encountered so many Pokémon, almost too many to count. For all of the hundreds of Pokémon he has seen, he has had a number of run-ins with Fire-type Pokémon, whether they are Legendary Pokémon sightings, Gym leader or rival Pokémon or members of his own team.

Ash has owned the Fire-type starter for all but 3 of the generations, with starters usually becoming among his strongest Pokémon, providing they all put in the work and training.

10 Entei: Mysterious & Ferocious

Entei Pokemon

Despite not making too many truly meaningful appearances in the anime, the way in which it deals with the situation in "Entei At Your Own Risk," where it uses Roar and avoids battle despite Nelson's Misdreavus supposedly trapping it using Mean Look, is indicative of Entei's power, without displaying any true feat of strength.

The illusions of Entei that appear in Spell Of The Unown: Entei and Zoroark: Master Of Illusions are also formidable and intimidating, suggesting further that Entei would put on some great battles in the main anime if pitted against Ash and his friends.

9 It Took The Fiery Competition Of Magmar To Finally Get Charizard To Battle

Charizard fighting Magmar in the Pokemon anime

It is well documented that Ash's Kanto journey consisted of questionable badge earnings and rarely winning the battle decisively. However, Ash is made to work for his Volcano badge, losing the first bout easily before winning the rematch.

It takes Charizard seeing Magmar's strength when trying to block the lava flow, to get it to finally battle for Ash, which is a testament to Magmar and its fiery power. Magmar is also used by Paul in the Diamond & Pearl series before it evolved into a formidable Magmortar.

8 Kiawe's Turtonator Perfectly Represents His Fiery Spirit

Turtonator with its back to its opponent

In Pokémon Sun & Moon, Turtonator is the cherished partner of Ash's friend from the Pokémon School, Kiawe. A self-proclaimed specialist in Fire-type Pokémon, Kiawe goes on to have a team of Charizard, Alolan Marowak, and his Turtonator.

Throughout the series, Turtonator's considerable strength, power, and defense are on show, with its Shell Trap also being activated countless times, when anything or anyone touches the spikes on its back it explodes.

7 Ash's Talonflame Is The Ideal Combination Of Flames & Flight

Ash's Talonflame

The fact that Ash's Fletchinder evolved into Talonflame while protecting him from a Moltres, speaks volumes about not only its considerable strength but also its character. Ash has always enjoyed using Flying-types and them being a dual-type with something as powerful as Fire is only a good thing for his Pokémon Master dreams.

Talonflame not only defeated Wulfric's Avalugg at the second time of asking but it also defeated Sawyer's powerhouse, Slaking, in the semi-finals of the Lumiose Conference, showing that no opponent is too big for this fiery bird.

6 Goh's Cinderace Really Kicks Up A Storm

Cinderace Lucario

In Pokémon Journeys, Goh's Raboot evolves into Cinderace mid-battle in order to defeat Oleana's Milotic, which is no mean feat in itself. Soon after, it faces off against Eternatus alongside Ash's Pikachu and Lucario, meaning that its first two major battles were tough and of great importance.

This is a testament to Cinderace's strength and character, with its footwork-oriented offense being unrivaled. A full-power Pyro Ball from a Cinderace is one of the most devastating Fire-type moves there is.

5 Moltres Is Always Being Pursued, But Always Escapes

Moltres Is Being Pursued in Pokemon

As it is a Legendary Pokémon, Moltres is pursued by Team Rocket every time it appears in the anime, apart from when a Moltres was captured by Lawrence III in Power of One.

In "All Fired Up," Moltres defeats Team Rocket when they attempt to steal the Moltres Flame during the opening ceremony of the Indigo Plateau Conference. In a later series, Butch and Cassidy also fail to capture Moltres, despite it being weakened. A Moltres even attacks Ash and friends in Kalos, when it mistakenly assumes that they are with Team Rocket. Fletchinder ultimately has to evolve into Talonflame to fend off Moltres, which makes the Legendary bird realize its mistake and it moves on.

4 Ho-oh Dominates The Skies

Pokemon anime Ash and Pikachu encounter Ho-Oh

At the end of I Choose You!, Ash and Pikachu finally face off against Ho-oh, the Fire-type Legendary Pokémon of the Johto region. However, after the initial few exchanges of moves, it cuts away to the next scene with Ash and Pikachu visiting the Pokémon Center, presumably having lost.

While Ho-oh's appearances in the anime are few and far between, it is one of the first Pokémon that Ash ever saw, all the way back in Kanto in the original series.

3 Incineroar Dominates The Ring & The Battlefield

Incineroar from Pokemon in a wrestling ring

Incineroar is the final Evolution form of Litten and is an unstoppable brute. Being a dual Fire and Dark-type fits its character, especially for the Incineroar belonging to the Masked Royal, who turns out to be Professor Kukui. The Battle Royal style of matches that they have resembles real-life wrestling and Incineroar's fierce strikes are the reason why they are the best.

When Ash and his Torracat face off against Kukui and this Incineroar at the Alolan Pokémon League, they have an incredible and brutal battle, with Torracat surprisingly emerging as the winner and immediately evolving into Incineroar itself. Ash also faces off against Cross's Incineroar in I Choose You!, with his Charmeleon initially losing the battle before evolving into Charizard and winning the rematch.

2 Infernape Packs A Punch

Infernape is fired up in the Pokemon Diamond & Pearl anime

Infernape is a dual Fire and Fighting-type, making it lethal in both physical and special attacks. In "Flint Sparks The Fire!," a member of the Sinnoh Elite Four, Flint, attempts to reignite Volkner's passion and love for Pokémon battles by having an exhibition match with Ash. After his Infernape knocks out Ash's Buizel, it is Infernape versus Infernape, with Flint's emerging victorious.

In "Memories Are Made Of Bliss!," Flint and his Infernape finally challenge the Champion, Cynthia. They put up a good fight but ultimately come up short after a fierce battle. Taking Cynthia's Garchomp to the limit is no small feat and is a testament to Infernape's fight, drive, and tenacity.

1 Charizard's Extravagant Fighting Lights Up Any Battle, Regardless Of Form

Charizard prepares to use flamethrower

Charizard is by far the most powerful Fire-type Pokémon in the anime, as it is one of the strongest Pokémon in at least 5 different trainers' teams. In Pokémon XY, Alain and Trevor both have Charizard that can Mega-evolve into Mega Charizard X and Y respectively. This is but one way that Charizard's strength is displayed beyond just the base Pokémon. In Pokémon Journeys, Leon is well-known for utilizing a Gigantimaxed Charizard which is also incredibly powerful and dominant.

In Sun & Moon, Kiawe mostly uses his Charizard for travel but it is still a capable fighter. However, out of all the Charizard in the anime, Ash's is the most improved in terms of developing its attitude and battling capabilities. Considering the fact that the original series essentially follows its growth from an abandoned Charmander to an aggressive Charmeleon, from a disobedient Charizard to one of Ash's all-time best Pokémon.
