The first trailer for Pokemon Detective Pikachu has arrived, showing us the eventual bond between a boy and his Pokemon ... detective.

Voiced by Ryan Reynolds, the icon of Nintendo's pocket-monster franchise helps Justice Smith's Tim find his missing father Harry Goodman. As a kid, Tim was obsessed with Pokemon growing up, and Detective Pikachu used to be his dad's partner.

In this world where humans and Pokemon live together, Tim is the only one who can communicate with Detective; everyone else around him only hears the typical "Pika pika!." The trailer features a variety of Pokemon, all of them of the Ge- 1 era, from Bulbasaur to  Charizard to Mr. Mime.

Detective Pikachu is the first live-action Pokemon movie, although Nintendo's plans at the big screen don't end there. Illumination, makers of the Minions franchise, are working on a Super Mario film expected to release in a handful of years. On the smaller screen, the Legend of Zelda franchise is rumored to be receiving an animated TV series similar to the recently released Castlevania.

Detective Pikachu releases in theaters May 10, 2019. The film stars Justice Smith, Ryan Reynolds, Kathryn Newton and Ken Watanabe.
