PlayStation finally unveiled the next version of its PlayStation Plus subscription service as it splits the program into three unique tiers.

Announced via an official blog post, this revamped service will combine the benefits of PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now, allowing users to select which package best fits their needs. PlayStation Plus has simply been rebranded as PlayStation Plus Essential and will net subscribers all the benefits the old service provided; this tier is the cheapest version and will set gamers back $9.99 USD a month. The one up is PlayStation Plus Extra, which includes everything from the first tier as well as access to a catalog of up to 400 PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 games which can be downloaded to the console. This version of the service costs $14.99 USD per month.

The most expensive tier is PlayStation Plus Premium which bundles together everything available in both the Essential and Plus packages. This version also includes an additional 340 games comprising PlayStation 3 titles, available via cloud streaming, and a collection of PlayStation One, PlayStation 2 and PlayStation Portable games. Subscribers will need to pay $17.99 USD per month to access the most advanced version of the new service.

"The new Extra and Premium tiers represent a major evolution for PlayStation Plus," writes Jim Ryan, President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment. "With these tiers, our key focus is to ensure that the hundreds of games we offer will include the best quality content that sets us apart. At launch, we plan to include titles such as Death Stranding, God of War, Marvel’s Spider-Man, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Mortal Kombat 11, and Returnal. We’re working closely with our imaginative developers from PlayStation Studios and third-party partners to include some of the best gaming experiences available with a library that will be regularly refreshed."

Many are comparing the new version of PS Plus with Microsoft's Xbox Game Pass subscription service which similarly provides users with access to a large library of games. Many fans are pointing out that one of the main differences between the programs relates to new games being made available to subscribers on launch. While Xbox Game Pass provides day-one access to the latest titles from Microsoft's studios, PlayStation's service doesn't seem to offer the same.

The revamped PlayStation Plus system is expected to launch globally this June.
