The developers of Marvel's Wolverine are reportedly aiming for a "Hard-R" gameplay experience.

As reported by TheDirect, this information came to light from gaming journalist Jeff Grubb, who revealed several intriguing details about Insomniac's upcoming title. According to Grubb, Marvel's Wolverine may offer players a far more violent gameplay experience than seen in previous Wolverine games. This could potentially result in a Mature rating.

"Hard-R is what they're going for. It's one of the concepts that I've heard," Grubb said. "I think one of the cool things about Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order was 'Hey, the lightsabers slice droids in half. And then the bad part was when you go up against Stormtroopers, it doesn't do that. Now, I'm mostly okay with that. I think with Wolverine though, put us into an environment where those claws are going to work as claws."

The New Wolverine Video Game

Marvel's Wolverine was revealed during PlayStation's 2021 Showcase, but details about the game's plot have been slow to come. Grubb said that it's likely to take place early on in the hero's career before he officially joins up with the X-men. He also stated that Marvel's Wolverine will not be connected to any established universes or storylines involving the character, which includes Fox's X- Men film series.

Only one official trailer is currently out for Marvel's Wolverine, which shows a man sitting in a bar littered with bodies while someone approaches him from behind holding a knife. The teaser ends abruptly with a shot of Wolverine's claws emerging from his bloody hand. Although the setting appears to be nondescript, close observers noticed that the bar is actually The Princess Bar, a famous venue from the Marvel Universe located in the fictional city of Madripoor, which serves as a sanctuary for some of the world's most notorious criminals. In addition to its long-standing existence in the comics, Madripoor has also been featured in the MCU; its last major appearance was in the 2021 miniseries The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

Marvel's Wolverine does not yet have an official release window. According to Grubb, the game could come out as early as Fall 2024, roughly one year after the projected launch of Marvel's Spider-Man 2. Although game studios do not usually release multiple triple AAA titles within such a short span of time, Grubb explained that gamers should not rule out the possibility, stating that if "anyone can pull off releasing two major AAA massive games, like marquee games for a platform back-to-back years, it is Insomniac."
