Since its release in late 2016, Sony's PlayStation VR headset has seen universal praise and criticism. While Sony successfully brought virtual reality technology to the mainstream gaming community, its implementation was decidedly first-generation and lacked refinement.

Console gamers won't have to put up with first-generation hardware for much longer. While it was long speculated that a sequel to Sony's successful VR headset would be released at the start of the new console generation, Sony has confirmed the project with the official PSVR2 announcement at CES 2022.

PlayStation VR 2's Features and Peripherals

While few details about PlayStation's next-generation headset have been disclosed, Sony's new design will be more ergonomic, less bulky and far easier to set up, requiring the user only to insert a single cable to connect the headset to their PS5. The new headset will feature a brand new OLED screen with a 2000 x 2040 resolution for each eye across a 110-degree field of view, and a refresh rate of 90Hz or 120Hz, depending on the game. The headset will also add 4 in-unit cameras for headset and controller tracking, similar to how the Oculus Quest 2 functions.

As for the method of control, Sony's next-generation VR headset will use an entirely new set of controllers, the PlayStation VR2 sense, which are built from the ground up for virtual reality. Taking on an orb shape, Sony's VR motion controllers intend to combine the best of the new DualSense controllers and the latest in PC VR tech. Sony's VR controllers will have finger touch detection and position tracking, as well as a six-axis motion sensing system.

Additionally, DualSense's advanced adaptive trigger and haptic feedback will be included in the controllers for increased immersion. In combination with the advancements in the new headset, PlayStation's new VR controllers will finally allow console gamers to take advantage of full 360-degree motion tracking, further increasing immersion and guaranteeing a more seamless VR experience.

PlayStation VR 2 Games

Out the gate, Sony has assured that every current generation PS VR title will be playable on their next-generation headset via backward compatibility, which also includes all upcoming 2021 PSVR games as well: such as Doom 3 VR Edition, Fracked, After The Fall and several other exclusives.

At CES 2022, Sony confirmed it would be bringing a brand new VR title, Horizon Call of the Mountain, to the platform. It's not yet known how the game relates to the still-upcoming Horizon Forbidden West, but Guerilla Games promised the title would feature a new protagonist (although players would eventually interact with Aloy during the game).

While the announcement at CES was exciting, fans still have a lot of information to look forward to...like when they can get the headset. No release date has been announced for the PlayStation VR 2 or the only announced tie-in game, Horizon Call of the Mountain.

PlayStation had previously confirmed that limited preorders are likely to follow once a release date is announced. However, no comment has been made on whether extra precautions will be taken to prevent the excessive scalping which has plagued the release of the PlayStation 5. Sony has also not yet announced a cost for the unit, though new features like OLED screens could drive the cost up.
