PlayStation finally unveiled its next-gen virtual reality headset while also revealing its first exclusive game: Horizon Call of the Mountain.

Revealed during Sony's Consumer Electronics Show presentation, the spin-off of the critically acclaimed Horizon Zero Dawn series will embed players in a world of high-tech animal robots. Speaking during the game's teaser trailer, Jan-Bart van Beek, the studio director at Guerrilla Games, describes Call of the Mountain as a "unique, new Horizon experience. One that has been built from the ground up for PlayStation's next-gen VR hardware." Taking full advantage of the updated system, the reveal trailer paints a visual picture rather than diving into the game's mechanics.

The teaser focuses on a group of travelers making their way down a small river. While the player looks at their companion, a gigantic creature is seen breaking through the dense jungle: A Tallneck, trekking through the wilderness. A single foot clears the boat as the magnificent beast clears the water and continues on its way. The identities of the three speaking characters are currently unknown but Guerilla Games confirmed that franchise star Aloy will appear at some point in the game.

Horizon Call of the Mountain will be the first game to take full advantage of the PSVR 2 headset, which will act as a successor to Sony's previous virtual reality product. This new system features an OLED display, a refresh rate of 90Hz and 120Hz, a panel resolution of 2000 x 2040 per eye and four cameras to track both a player's head and their controllers. Sony has yet to reveal a solid release date for the PSVR 2 but many fans are speculating that the device will launch towards the end of 2022.

Fans of the Horizon franchise have plenty to look forward to in the coming months. While Call of the Mountain doesn't yet have a release date, Horizon Forbidden West is currently scheduled to launch on Feb. 18, 2022. The upcoming PlayStation exclusive will act as a direct sequel to Horizon Zero Dawn, chronicling Aloy's journey to find her mother and learn more about the gigantic robotic monsters that prowl the wilderness. While the gameplay trailer showcase many features fans of the franchise will recognize, the game will also be adding plenty of new mechanics that will hopefully make traversal and combat even more engaging.

Horizon Forbidden West will be available for both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 systems.
