Sony announced it will no longer offer TV and movie rentals and purchases through the PlayStation Store.

"At SIE [Sony Interactive Entertainment], we strive to provide the best entertainment experience for PlayStation fans, and that means evolving our offerings as customer needs change," SIE Head of Video Business Vanessa Lee said in a statement. "We've seen tremendous growth from PlayStation fans using subscription-based and ad-based entertainment streaming services on our consoles. With this shift in customer behavior, we have decided to no longer offer movie and TV purchases and rentals through PlayStation Store." The change will take effect on Aug. 31.

Users who previously purchased movies and TV shows through the PlayStation Store will still be able to access that content on their PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and mobile devices. Those looking to purchase films and TV series can use the Amazon, Prime Video, YouTube and Vudu applications, which are still available on the PlayStation Store. Of course, apps for streamers like Netflix, HBO Max and Disney+ are also downloadable.

"We thank our fans for their continued support, and we look forward to further enhancing the entertainment experience on PlayStation," Lee concluded.
