A recent leak confirmed the existence of a video game based on The Matrix: Resurrections film.

Posted to Reddit by u/the_andshrew, the image was reportedly discovered within the database of PlayStation Network. The poster, which contains the franchise's iconic green text, confirms that the name of the "experience" is The Matrix Awakens. Beyond that, the only other notable piece of information is that the project has been created using Unreal Engine 5, Epic Games' latest creation tool. The leaker states that no other details were discovered beyond the fact that it will be available on PlayStation 5.

While many fans of The Matrix may be excited about a new tie-in game, it's worth noting the use of the word "experience." This may indicate that The Matrix Awakens won't feature traditional mechanics and systems and simply allow players to dwell within the world of the beloved cyberpunk franchise. How this game will connect to The Matrix Resurrections remains unknown but given the impending launch of the film, an official announcement will likely take place in the near future.

The Matrix is no stranger to video game adaptions, boasting three unique titles set within the expansive universe. While Enter the Matrix and The Matrix: Path of Neo were both praised by fans and critics alike, The Matrix Online is the game most fans of the series should pay attention to. Despite shutting down its servers in 2009, the MMO had far-reaching ramifications for the franchise, even resulting in the canonical death of fan-favorite character Morpheus.

Laurence Fishburne may not be returning in The Matrix Resurrections but fans can look forward to franchise alumni Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Ann Moss reprising their roles as Neo and Trinity respectively. When asked why exactly Reeves wanted to return as arguably his most iconic character, the actor responded by saying, "We had filmmakers who you wanted to say yes to. [We had] material that you wanted to commit to, to give everything that you could to."

Speaking to the story of Matrix Resurrectionsco-writer David Mitchell said, "I cannot tell you what this film is about, but I could explain what it is not. It's certainly not yet one more sequel, but something autonomous that contains however the three Matrix that preceded in a really ingenious way. It's a very beautiful and weird creation. It also achieves a couple of things that we do not see in action films, meaning it subverts the rules of blockbusters."

The Matrix Resurrections arrives in theaters on Dec. 22.
