Since the announcement of Sony's PlayStation 5, users have asked about backwards compatibility and whether or not the upcoming console will be able to run PlayStation 4 games. Sony has now provided a clear answer about the issue.

In a PlayStation Blog post, Sony explained that upon release, "More than 99 percent of the 4000+ games available on PS4 will be playable on PS5." The post went on to suggest that backward compatibility will only apply to PlayStation 4 games and not those from other console generations. Sony wrote that it was focused on bringing to the PS5 games that "have defined the PS4 generation – from critically acclaimed PlayStation exclusives like The Last of Us Part II and Ghost of Tsushima, to blockbuster hits from our third-party partners."

Sony teased, "Select PS4 titles will see increased loading speeds on the PS5 console, and will also leverage Game Boost, offering improved or more stable frame rates," adding, "Some titles with unlocked frame rates or dynamic resolution up to 4K may see higher fidelity. Additionally, PS4 games will also take advantage of some of PS5's new UX features, but more to come on that later."

Additionally, Sony clarified that the single difference between the two versions of the PlayStation 5 will be in the way users access content-- the standard edition will allow for the use of discs while the Digital Edition will not possess a disc drive and will therefore only allow users to purchase and play video games through the PlayStation Store or PlayStation mobile app.
