While the PlayStation 5 will reportedly be backwards-compatible with the majority of the PlayStation 4's most popular titles, this feature may not be available for Sony's older home video game consoles.

A post on prolific video game developer Ubisoft's website detailed the upgrade process for players to access their favorite Ubisoft PS4 titles on the upcoming PS5. The initial post claimed that while PS4 titles would be backwards-compatible as previously reported, the upgrade feature would not be accessible for older generations, including the PS3, PS2 or the original PS1. While the post has since been updated on Ubisoft's website to remove the claim, a screenshot of the original post is below.

In addition to software, the PS5 will feature limited backwards-compatibility with PS4 hardware, including the VR headset and PS4 controllers, though with the latter only functional with PS4 titles as the PS5 will require the new console's haptic controllers.

With consumer demand for the PS5 exceeding early expectations, Sony has reportedly doubled its production orders for the new console ahead of its release this holiday season. The console is available for preorder online directly through Sony, though preorder quantities are limited.
