Pixar's female characters are blessed with the same quantity of strength, courage, and intelligence as their male counterparts. Although most of the animation studio's movies center around male protagonists, the female characters leave a marked impression on viewers.
One aspect of female characters rarely considered when evaluating their merits is their sense of humor, partly because comedy is a boys' club, but also because women tend to be arbitrarily stereotyped. Nevertheless, the diversity of female characters in Pixar means there are several who are at least amusing if not downright hilarious.
10 Disgust's Flair For Drama Endears Her To Audiences — Inside Out (2015)
Joy and Sadness are charming in their own ways, but it's Disgust who ends up being the funniest Emotion in Riley's young mind. Her exaggerated reactions highlight a flair for the theatrical, although her obdurate demeanor sometimes causes problems for her companions.
Disgust isn't a central figure in Inside Out, but her melodramatic attitude endears her to audiences. She occasionally breaks character and expresses other emotions, which makes her appear more charming than she'd like to be.
9 Colette Tatou Is Hilarious, Even If She Won't Admit It — Ratatouille (2007)
Colette is the diametric opposite of Alfredo Linguini's milquetoast persona — a self-reliant badass who proudly calls herself the "toughest cook in the kitchen." She earns her place at Gusteau's with hard work and persistence, which is a fiery combination few Pixar characters exhibit.
Despite her brusque exterior and no-nonsense attitude, Colette is – perhaps inadvertently – an exceptionally hilarious character. Colette relaxes significantly after Gusteau's is shut down, sacrificing her sassy comedic style in the process.
8 Jessie's Sense Of Humor Can Be Described As Facetious — Toy Story 2 (1999)
Jessie exhibits a number of insecurities, from claustrophobia to a fear of abandonment. However, she doesn't allow her past to affect her enjoyment of the present and gradually learns to overcome her issues.
Jessie's sense of humor can be described as facetious: one of the many reasons why Buzz Lightyear develops a crush on her. Voiced by the brilliantly funny Joan Cusack, Jessie remains among the most intriguing female characters ever created by Pixar.
7 Maudie And The Triplets Are A Devastatingly Funny Combination — Brave (2007)
Brave is all about Merida and her struggle to prove herself in the eyes of her patriarchal family, but some supporting characters deserve a mention as well. Harris, Hubert, and Hamish provide a large chunk of the movie's comic relief when they interact with the guileless castle maid.
Maudie spends her days avoiding the identical triplets as much as she can, but they always manage to pinpoint her location (and the tarts she constantly carries). All's well that ends well for Maudie, who finds herself a potential suitor in Brave's final scenes.
6 Daniela Paguro's Comedic Sense Is Largely Observational — Luca (2021)
Luca wants to explore the bright, airy world that lies above the ocean, but his mother, Daniela, is having none of it. She truly believes that all land-dwellers have it out for sea monsters. This is an understandable reaction, given how most humans treat other living creatures.
Maya Rudolph captures Daniela's frustration perfectly, both in her original form and in her humanoid version (while she hunts for Luca). Daniela's comedic sense is largely observational.
5 Roz's Delivers Her Lines With Flawless Deadpan — Monsters, Inc. (2001)
Roz manages the administrative duties of Scare Floor F, maintaining files, records, and keys related to each employee. She's a visually memorable monster — cat-eye glasses, a nondescript cardigan, a mohawk of grey hair, and faint makeup.
But what sets Roz apart from everyone else is her hilariously deadpan expression (or lack thereof). Nothing fazes this character because she's far too old and experienced in comparison to Mike and Sully. However, the real reason is that she's the Child Detection Agency's undercover Agent #000001.
4 Dory's Bubbleheaded Nature Is A Part Of Her Charm — Finding Dory (2016)
Dory's hopeful nature doesn't conflict with her short-term memory loss whatsoever. On the contrary, she continues to spread cheer and warmth wherever she goes. Dory can, on occasion, be a little bubbleheaded, but this is more a point in her favor than anything else.
Her intellectual capacity is surprisingly large, considering her otherwise ditzy demeanor, but one characteristic her fans can all agree on is Dory's engaging perspectives on life.
3 Frida Kahlo's Animated Counterpart Is Eccentrically Hilarious — Coco (2017)
The Rivera household has been a matriarchy since Héctor's disappearance. It was first established by Mamá Imelda and is currently run by her granddaughter, Elena. However, none of the Rivera women are as eccentrically funny as Frida Kahlo's ghostly skeleton in the Land of the Dead.
The animated version of the real-life Chicano artist is flamboyant, hyperactive, and thoroughly supportive of Miguel's musical ambitions. Frida's alebrije, a polychromatic monkey that breathes blue fire, is equally amusing.
2 Edna Mode's Trademark Smirk And Farcical Persona Form The Foundation Of Her Character — The Incredibles (2004)
Edna Mode is a droll super-suit designer whose personality verges on the farcical. Her character is an homage to various icons in the fashion industry, including multiple Oscar-winner Edith Head and Anna Wintour — the inspiration for Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada (2003).
Edna is formal and demanding when she needs to be, but she also has a soft spot for old friends and small babies. What audiences remember most about Edna Mode, however, is her trademark smirk.
1 22 Would Rather Spend The Rest Of Eternity Goofing Off In The Great Before — Soul (2020)
Tina Fey lends her talents to 22: an ancient soul who refuses to leave the Great Before for life on Earth. The character claims to employ a "middle-aged white lady['s]" voice because it apparently irritates everyone else.
22 uses humor to mask her true feelings, which are eventually dragged out when she meets Joe and "possesses" his human body. 22 doesn't care much for protocol, either — she would rather spend the rest of eternity goofing off.
