Toy Story co-writer and Pixar legend Andrew Stanton has shot down the viral “explanation” for Woody’s apparent amnesia in the Toy Story film series.
The explanation originated from a YouTube video that seemed to confirm (from a reliable source) that Andy’s father, Andy Sr. had polio and formerly owned Woody — in addition to Mr. Potato Head and Slinky — and gave away his toys to his son in the wake of his passing. The explanation suggests that Woody makes no mention of his previous owner, Andy Sr., because he doesn’t realize Andy Jr. is an entirely different child when he emerges from the toy trunk years later.
Stanton Tweeted this weekend, “Complete and utter fake news,” and signed off with the hashtag “iwasthere.”
