This is the Cars franchise's first branch into a TV series, following Pixar’s three theatrical movies in 2006, 2011 and 2017. The movies followed rookie racer Lightning McQueen, who finds himself lost in a town called Radiator Springs. There he meets tow truck Mater and residents of the town, whom he must work hard to befriend. The movie featured the likes of Bolly Hunt as Sally, Paul Newman as Doc Hudson and Michael Keaton as Chick Hicks.

The sequel, which has a greater focus on Larry the Cable Guy's character Mater, mimics the international spy genre, with Mater working alongside undercover spy agents to prevent a global threat. McQueen on the other hand puts all his time into winning the World Grand Prix. The final movie follows McQueen’s attempt to stay relevant as an aging race car in a technologically advanced world as he trains a new recruit.

The next installment in the franchise, Cars on the Road, will premiere next year on Disney+.
