When Captain Jack Sparrow returns to the high seas of the Caribbean next year, viewers will be right there alongside him for the ride. According to Heat Vision, the fourth installment in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise — titled Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides — will be shot in what the Walt Disney Company is describing as Disney Digital 3D.
Of all the major blockbusters planned for release over the next several years, Pirates of the Caribbean strikes me as one of the best candidates for a 3D shoot. With lush landscapes, fast-paced action and even a healthy dose of comedy to boot, Sparrow's adventures truly lend themselves to the 3D format. Assuming that the film is built from the ground up with 3D in mind — as opposed to the increasingly transparent money-grubbing trend for retroactive 3D conversions — fans should be in for a fun visual ride with the new Pirates.
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides stars Johnny Depp, Penelope Cruz, Geoffrey Rush and Ian McShane as Blackbeard. Rob Marshall directs.
