Captain Salazar's backstory and the roots of his vendetta against Jack Sparrow are revealed in the new trailer for Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales," billed as the beginning of "the final adventure."
The new footage also introduces Johnny Depp as a (presumably) teenage pirate, thanks to some CG handiwork, something that may be more alarming than any undead sharks prowling the seas.
In the fifth installment of the $3.7 million fantasy-adventure franchise, Jack Sparrow is pursued by old rival Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem), who has escaped from the Devil’s Triangle with his ghost crew, and is now determined to kill every pirate at sea. To defeat him, Jack must seek the Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artifact that grants whoever possesses it total control of the sea.
Directed by Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg from a script by Jeff Nathanson, the film also stars Geoffrey Rush as Hector Barbossa, Brenton Thwaites Henry, Kaya Scodelario as Carina Smyth, Kevin R. McNally as Joshamee Gibbs, Golshifteh Farahani as the sea-witch Shansa, David Wenham as Scarfield, Stephen Graham as Scrum and Orlando Bloom as Will Turner. They’re also expected to be joined by Keira Knightley, who reprises her role as Elizabeth Swann.
“Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” arrives May 26.
