Walt Disney Studios revealed the first look images from Pinocchio in March. The photos offered a glimpse at Hanks as Geppetto talking to the titular puppet. Pinocchio tells the story of a wooden puppet of the same name, carved by a man named Geppetto, who is brought to life by the Blue Fairy after the woodcarver wishes on a shooting star. Based on the 1883 children's novel titled The Adventures of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi, the original 1940 film of the same name film follows Pinocchio and his conscience, Jiminy Cricket, on his quest to become a real boy.

Directed by Robert Zemeckis, it was announced in March 2021 that Gordon-Levitt and Erivo had joined the cast of Pinocchio. The two actors were joined by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth, who will voice Pinocchio, Keegan-Michael Key as Honest John and Lorraine Bracco as the voice of Sofia the Seagull, an original character created specifically for the remake. Luke Evans will portray the coachman who escorts Pinocchio and the boys to Pleasure Island.

Pinocchio (1940) was the second animated film released by Walt Disney Studios after Snow White in 1937 and the live-action film will be one of several remakes set to be released by the company. Projects currently in production include the live-action adaptation of Snow White, which has found its lead in West Side Story star Rachel Zegler.

Disney's next live-action film to hit theaters will be The Little Mermaid starring Halle Bailey as Princess Ariel, which is currently set for a 2023 release date. The live-action remake of Disney's 1989 animated classic began production in 2016, but Bailey, known for her work as one half of the R&B duo Chloe & Halle, was not cast in the lead role until 2019. She wrapped filming on the project in July 2021, but her casting was initially met with some backlash, as she is a person of color who was cast as a mermaid that was depicted as white in the original.

Pinocchio does not yet have a release date, but it will release exclusively on Disney+.
