After proposing a spinoff series to his hit Paramount+ show Star Trek: Picard, showrunner Terry Matalas quells rumors Legacy is in development for the streaming service.

Speaking with Screen Rant, Matalas addressed the speculation surrounding Legacy and whether the spinoff has received the green light from the studio amid positive feedback from fans within the Star Trek universe. Based on his response, audiences shouldn't expect anything, though he hasn't ruled it out entirely. "Let me be clear - THERE IS NOTHING IN DEVELOPMENT AT PARAMOUNT - Again, I need to be clear on this. This is just a pie-in-the-sky wish on my part. There is nothing in development," he said. "It would be amazing if one day they came to me and said they were interested, but as of press time, it's little more than a 'Hey, wouldn't that be neat!' But hey, stranger things have happened!"

Matalas has mentioned the idea of a Legacy series for some time, clarifying in March 2023 that the Picard spinoff would be set in the 25th century, exploring the Last Generation and Next Generation. His tweet about the proposed idea received strong positive feedback from Star Trek fans, who openly suggested which characters could appear in it. Per Matalas' recent statements, Paramount has yet to greenlight anything related to the idea.

Picard Is a Major Success

Picard Season 3 continues to garner overwhelmingly positive feedback from critics and viewers as the series draws to a close. Season 3 reunited The Next Generation cast, led by Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden) and Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton) while introducing new faces such as Alandra La Forge (Mica Burton), Sidney La Forge (Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut) and Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers). Matalas directed Season 3, Episode 9, "Võx," which revealed the truth about Jack and the Changeling conspiracy, setting the stage for the upcoming Season 3 finale "The Last Generation."

Picard became the first Star Trek series to break into Nielsen's top 10 streaming charts, with the show racking up over 310 million total viewing minutes. It's also just the second Paramount+ show to appear on Nielsen's list after the Yellowstone spinoff 1923, starring Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren. Picard boasts a 98% critical rating and 90% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, further driving home its popularity.
