Ahead of Persona 5 Strikers’ upcoming US release, Atlus has released a new combat trailer for the game. While previous trailers focused on showcasing the game’s new story, this latest trailer drives home just how wild combat gets in Strikers.

Persona 5 Strikers follows the events of the wildly popular JRPG Persona 5, moving the Phantom Thieves into new territory: the frantic hack and slash action of the Warriors (also known as Musou) genre. Musou has become a destination for many a great franchise, but Persona seems more at home with it than most.

Highlighted in the trailer is Persona 5 Strikers’ exciting new combat system. No longer are you held back by the doldrums of row-based RPG combat. The Phantom Thieves are entirely in your control now, giving you the ability to switch between any members of your four-person party on the fly.

In our earlier hands-on with the game, we saw first hand how the game incentivizes using your whole party with a Baton Pass mechanic, which sees your party get a variety of buffs through judicious swapping between characters. Your party will also be able to team up in order to wear down an opponent by targeting specific weaknesses, a tactic that is absolutely crucial to defeating the game’s first boss.

The game’s not just all about combat, mind you. There’s still plenty of RPG mechanics, from investigations to a cooking mini-game. You’ll also find yourself scouring towns and hitting up various shops throughout Japan to find new equipment and items to make sure you’re strong enough to handle the waves of enemies you’ll encounter throughout the game.

Persona 5 Strikers picks up a few months after the end of Persona 5, with the Phantom Thieves reuniting for summer vacation. However, the group soon finds themselves thrust back into madness when they discover a new Metaverse that houses the sinister Jails and a wicked pop star, Alice, who has stolen the desires of Shibuya’s citizens. With the Phantom Thieves the number one suspects for the strange goings-on, they must band together once more to change Alice's heart and restore the city's desires before they lose everything.

Persona fans have been chomping at the bit to get their hands on Persona 5 Strikers since it was released in Japan early last year, and the time is almost here. Pre-ordering now nets several bonuses, including background music tracks from previous Persona titles and a selection of character boosts.

Developed by Omega Force and P-Studio and published by Atlus, Persona 5 Strikers releases for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and PC Feb. 23.
