Disney+'s upcoming Percy Jackson series has found its star with actor Walker Scobell, who most recently appeared in Netflix's The Adam Project.

The live-action series centers on the titular demigod, a 12-year-old Percy Jackson, as he grapples with his godly powers and attempts to clear his name when he is accused by none other than Zeus, of stealing his master lightning bolt.

Eager audiences have had a stream of news over the last few months, with Percy Jackson and the Olympians author Rick Riordan recently revealing the Disney+ series' episode count: the first season of the adaptation will consist of eight episodes. It's unknown how long each episode will be. Prior to this news, Riordan also revealed that filming was scheduled to begin in late spring. On his blog, the writer wrote, "We are due to start filming on June 1, assuming all goes as planned, and Becky [Riordan, wife] and I will be there from day one!"

Following years of development, Disney+ gave the series the green light in January. Riordan wrote the pilot with Jon Steinberg. James Bobin is attached to direct and all three are serving as executive producers. Dan Shotz, Rebecca Riordan, Bert Salke, Monica Owusu-Breen, Jim Rowe, Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Jeremy Bell and D.J. Goldberg also set to executive produce. Beyond Scobell, no cast members have yet been announced.

At the time of the series' announcement, Disney Branded TV President Ayo Davis said, "With Rick Riordan, Jon Steinberg and Dan Shotz leading our creative team, we're deep into creating a compelling TV series worthy of the heroic mythological characters that millions of Percy Jackson readers know are well-worth caring about... We're eager to invite Disney+ audiences into stories that are true to the blockbuster franchise and full of anticipation, humor, surprise, and mystery."

There have been past attempts at adapting the Percy Jackson novels. Namely the 2010 and 2013 films directed by Chris Columbus and Thor Freudenthal. Riordan previously wrote on social media, "To you guys, it's a couple hours entertainment. To me, it's my life's work going through a meat grinder when I pleaded with them not to do it. So yeah. But it's fine. All fine. We're gonna fix it soon..."

Scobell's breakout role was on Netflix's The Adam Project, which featured a star-studded cast including Ryan Reynolds, Jennifer Garner, Zoe Saldaña and Mark Ruffalo. The film earned generally positive reviews upon release, with critics generally praising the performance of the film's cast, very much including it's two leads-- Ryan Reynolds and Walker Scobell.
