As introduced in Pennyworth, Lucius Fox is still figuring out what kind of person he's going to become while working to undermine the plans set in motion by the Raven Society that could earn them victory and control over England. This gives the character -- who's often portrayed as being on the sidelines during the various battles -- a chance to be a bit more active and engaged in the mission at hand.

During an exclusive interview with CBR, Simon Manyonda spoke about how playing Lucius Fox on Pennyworth connects to him personally, and which DC character he'd love to see his version of Fox encounter.

"Lucius Fox is the Q to Batman's James Bond," Manyonda noted. "And I suppose in this show, the James Bond character really is Alfred Pennyworth, so as it goes on, maybe Lucius might start making gadgets for Alfred to make him more efficient, as a sort of process. So then you get that 007 kind of vibe, except more detailed because of course with Q, he just comes in and does his bit, and then you never see him again. But, in this case, Lucius gets to go on the whole caper and, more importantly, use his own inventions to outwit the bad guys."

Playing the scientifically-minded Lucius ended up being something of a familiar experience for Manyonda, who revealed that the role of Lucius "really suited my personality. I really enjoy tech. When I was a kid I wanted to be an inventor. That was my favorite game to play, being an inventor, because my parents were doctors so there was always science-y kind of stuff around my house. But I didn't actually want to be a scientist. I had no real intention of being a scientist but I liked the game of science, of a mad scientist.

"My parents [were] were so pragmatic and matter-of-fact. I didn't realize that at the time, obviously, because I was a kid. I just thought everything was normal. But then, growing up, I realized that I had become a really frank person and that my humor was born from that... Because I didn't know I was being funny, but people would find my frankness to be very amusing. And so, this character, I just knew in myself who he was... I've been around who he was. And I really relish this idea of me always having cool gadgets and being able to play with gadgets, and having an emotional and psychological relationship to those gadgets, which I think that Lucius does have and we need to set up, which is why he goes on to make non-lethal weapons."

The size and scope of the DC Universe means that there are plenty of exciting characters for Lucius to encounter at some point. For Manyoda, there's one specific character he'd love to see Fox encounter: Cyborg. Specifically, the version featured in the HBO Max series Doom Patrol. "I think he would just absolutely fascinate Lucius, and I think he'd like to meet Cyborg. He would just be going absolutely crazy. And if Cyborg's got any issues, [Lucius] maybe could fix him up more. I'm not sure when Doom Patrol is set, but certainly, there might have to be a time jump.. Maybe there could be a mad situation where Lucius invents a time machine, jumps to the future, meets Cyborg, gets loads of mad technology from him, and then comes back."

Developed by former Gotham collaborators Bruno Heller and Danny Cannon, Pennyworth stars Jack Bannon as Alfred Pennyworth, Ben Aldridge as Thomas Wayne, Jason Flemyng as Lord Harwood, Paloma Faith as Bet Sykes, Ryan Fletcher as Dave Boy, Hainsley Lloyd Bennett as Bazza, Jessica Ellerby as the Queen and Simon Manyonda as Lucius Fox. Season 2 returns Mar. 7 on EPIX.
