Pennyworth showrunner Danny Cannon offered some insight into the series' villains and revealed that, while nothing is off limits, he knows what we won't see.

Pennyworth won't have the typical Batman rogues we're used to, or -- at least -- won't have an emphasis on them. Ancestors of the Joker and Penguin aren't slated for an appearance, but we might get a descendant of some infamous characters from English history and literature.

The series will use "archetypal villains and classic villains of British literature; they’re all available to us,” Cannon said at the Television Critics Association's winter press tour. “Jack the Ripper was 1880s, but he has descendants,” he teased.

So far, Alfred's main adversaries in Pennyworth are Bet Sykes, a “spirited, sadistic and sharp-tongued villain” who has an equally ruthless and maniacal sister Peggy (Polly Walker), a "successful" and "resourceful" dominatrix, and Lord Harwood (Jason Flemyng), leader of an underground crime organization.

The show takes place in a darker, alternate swinging-60s London, England, twenty years before the events in Gotham. A veteran of war and British SAS, Alfred meets a young Thomas Wayne for the first time, and Wayne has some sort of ties to the CIA as an advisor. The two find a friend and ally in one another.

Executive produced by Danny Cannon and Bruno Heller, who also writes, Pennyworth debuts on Epix this June for a 10-episode season.
