The first teaser trailer for Pennyworth Season 3 reintroduces audiences to Jack Bannon's Alfred Pennyworth before he was Batman's butler.

IGN unveiled the official trailer, which revealed that Pennyworth has been retitled Pennyworth: The Origin of Batman’s Butler for its third season. Instead of picking up immediately after the events of the second season, the new season of the psychological thriller series will begin with a bit of a reset. Season 3 will open with "a five-year time jump, [meaning] the civil war is over, and a cultural revolution has changed the world for better or worse – ushering in a new age of Super Heroes and Supervillains."

The DC origin series Pennyworth: The Origin of Batman’s Butler follows Banon's Alfred Pennyworth, a former British SAS soldier, who forms a security company in 1960s London and goes to work with young billionaire Thomas Wayne (Ben Aldridge) and his wife Martha (Emma Paetz), before they become Bruce Wayne’s parents. The series was originally developed as a prequel to Gotham, which aired on Fox between 2014 and 2019, with Bannon playing a younger version of Alfred Pennyworth that was previously portrayed by Sean Pertwee in the Fox series. However, Pennyworth's ties to Gotham have been left ambiguous since the prequel series began airing in 2019.

Pennyworth Jumps to HBO Max

Developed for television by Gotham's Bruno Heller and Danny Cannon, Pennyworth premiered in 2019 on Epix. A second season followed in 2020. At the DC FanDome virtual convention in October 2021, it was announced that Pennyworth had not only been renewed for Season 3 but would be leaving Epix for HBO Max. Pennyworth Seasons 1 and 2 were added to HBO Max's streaming library in January 2022. Additionally, a seven-issue tie-in comic book series launched in August 2021 from DC. The comic book series, which shares continuity with the live-action series, takes Alfred on a globe-trotting adventure searching for information that will help the British government get the edge over the Soviet Union.
